The first ESPN class rankings have been revealed and there is one surprise in the ACC -- Maryland checks in at No. 16.

It's about time.

Recruiting has been at the heart of the Terps' problems, but since the return of offensive coordinator/coach-in-waiting James Franklin -- the best recruiter on staff -- Maryland has quietly been refocusing its efforts. Maryland has landed a pair of top-50 receivers in its 2011 class, and three offensive linemen -- another major area of concern for Ralph Friedgen in recent years. Eventually, Franklin is going to take over in College Park, and when he does, he'll want the pieces in place. Friedgen's contract expires Jan. 2, 2012, so these recruits are integral to Franklin's success. It's the same scenario Florida State had, as Jimbo Fisher was working the recruiting trails hard knowing it was only a matter of time before he'd be the one coaching those players.

Florida State had the No. 6 class in the first ranking, followed by No. 19 Clemson and No. 22 North Carolina.
