Here are a few notes from around the league you might not have already known:
  • Clemson has averaged nine wins a year since 1972 when the Tigers have had at least four returning starters in the offensive line. Four starters return this fall.
  • NC State players who were listed as starters have missed a combined 180 games due to injuries over the past three seasons.
  • Jimbo Fisher began his coaching career at Samford, where he spent five years (1988-92) as an assistant under Terry Bowden, who coached Fisher as a quarterback at Salem College and at Samford.
  • Graig Cooper needs 958 yards to become Miami’s all-time leader in all-purpose yardage. Cooper, who has 3,437 yards coming into this season, is currently fifth in UM history behind Eddie Dunn (3,476), Edgerrin James (3,590), Ottis Anderson (4,265) and leader Santana Moss (4,394).
  • Virginia Tech junior Jarrett Boykin’s hands are so large that he has to wear size-3X receivers gloves. His thick fingers repeatedly split the seams of his gloves, sending him back to equipment manager Lester Karlin for a replacement.
  • In his two seasons at Georgia Tech, Paul Johnson has compiled a record of 10-1 in games decided by five points or fewer, including a streak of nine wins in a row.
  • The Terps have not had a punt blocked since Nov. 13, 1999 (Florida State), a stretch of 123 games, which is the longest active streak in the nation.
  • The 2010 season is just the fourth season in the past 15 years that Duke has not had a returning quarterback with at least one career start.
  • Mike London is aiming to become the first Virginia coach to win his debut game since the Bill Elias-led Cavaliers defeated William and Mary 21-6 in 1961.The last six first-year Virginia coaches all have lost their openers.
  • Boston College senior fullback Codi Boek and Weber State RT Kevin Halfhill are best friends who grew up together in California. Boek is from Fair Oaks while Halfhill hails from the neighboring town, Citrus Heights. Both players attended Del Campo High School. This will be the first time the two have ever played against each other as they played on the same Little League team and also played football and basketball in high school.
  • Wake Forest redshirt freshman receiver Chris Givens in 2009 led the nation in touchdown receptions by a freshman. Givens had eight touchdown catches. Toledo freshman receiver Eric Page was second with seven touchdown grabs.
