LANDOVER, Md. -- The scene is utter chaos outside FedEx Field, and while the Boise State fans are outnumbered, they're definitely noticeable in their smurf -blue T-shirts. The tailgating is in full effect, and fans were crowded at the gates waiting to get in long before they opened.

There's a feeling of pent-up excitement here as kickoff nears, but Virginia Tech fans need to be cautiously optimistic. Why? Well, for starters, Boise State is obviously very good, but I'm talking about the Hokies' history:

Virginia Tech enters this game with an all-time record of 1-25 against teams ranked in the top 5 of the AP poll (beat No. 2 Miami in 2003). And as much as this can be considered a home game, the Hokies are 0-21 in such games away from Blacksburg, VA. Virginia Tech is also 2-9 in its previous games against top-10 teams.

Hokies fans always wonder why, with six consecutive 10-win seasons, does Virginia Tech still seem like it's flying under the national radar? Because despite its consistent success, it hasn't consistently beat the Big Boys -- and at No. 3 in the polls, Boise State has worked its way into that classification.
