Yes, Drew Weatherford will be the Seminoles' starting quarterback heading into the fall, but the question is how long he'll keep that job. Based on how Christian Ponder looked this spring, it's going to be hard for the coaching staff to keep this guy off the field.
FSU offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jimbo Fisher gave me his scouting report on the quarterbacks, and with Ponder and D'Vontrey Richardson continuously improving, Fisher's options are growing.
"He's the starter, but Christain Ponder has tremendously closed the gap and D'Vontrey Richardson also," Fisher said. "They've earned the right to play."
Ponder is about 6-foot-2, 220 pounds and runs a 4.6-4.62 40. He's extremely athletic, a great decision maker, very intelligent and accurate. He can also beat you with his feet, and was very consistent this spring. He's only going to be a redshirt sophomore, but will graduate this summer with a degree in finance with a GPA around 3.7. (Seriously, how many people -- let alone football players -- do you know who have done that?)
"I mean highly intelligent," Fisher said. "He's going to be working on his MBA.
"He's ready to challenge now. Drew's the guy, and he has to beat him out, but he's ready. He really is. But, at the same time, I think Richardson, in the second half of spring ... he got a hold of it. He's a 4.4 kid. He's a legit 6-1, 210, 4.4. Those two kids ... they're going to be really good players."
Richardson had been a starting center fielder on FSU's outstanding baseball team, but quit to focus on being a quarterback. Apparently, it's paid off.
And don't forget about highly touted recruit E.J. Manuel. He's on campus, too.
First impressions?
"He's everything I thought he was," Fisher said.
Weatherford showed significant improvement last season and drastically cut down on his turnovers, but he still needs to work on his decision-making and accuracy. His challenge will be protecting the ball while at the same time make some big plays. Part of that is on the receivers, too, of course.
If he doesn't, there's plenty of talent waiting in the wings.
