Virginia Tech starting linebacker Lyndell Gibson, who suffered a left scapular fracture during the second quarter of the ACC championship game against Florida State, will have season-ending surgery on his shoulder next week at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg and miss the Discover Orange Bowl against Stanford.

Gibson had a CT scan and met with the doctors on Tuesday. A full recovery is expected in six to eight months, according to head athletic trainer Mike Goforth. Gibson was fourth on the team in tackles with 66, had six tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries, two sacks, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Hokies will now turn to redshirt freshman Tariq Edwards, who replaced Gibson in the title game. He has played in all 13 games but will likely make his first start. Edwards has 21 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
