Miami AD Kirby Hocutt isn't the only one who was willing to take a risk on a young, inexperienced coach. When former Virginia coach Al Groh hired Golden as his defensive coordinator, Golden was the youngest defensive coordinator in the country at 31 years old.
"We wouldn't have done so at that particular time if we didn't see his skills and his potential and have the vision for what he could be in the future," said Groh, now Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator. "He quickly lived up to that with us and has done so on his own."
Groh said "this type of position is one that was apparent from the outset, that Al was going to develop into very capable of handling."
