Former Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen and his replacement, coach Randy Edsall, were actually once on the same team.
In 1998, Edsall was Georgia Tech's defensive coordinator and Friedgen was the Jackets' offensive coordinator. That season, Friedgen was a finalist for the Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach when the Ramblin' Wreck set a then-school record with 50 touchdowns.
Friedgen was the ACC's coach of the year, Edsall the Big East coach of the year. Friedgen fired, Edsall hired. Only time will tell if it all made sense.
It's hard to believe, though, that their careers have come full circle at Maryland. The difference is that for Friedgen, Maryland is likely where he reached his peak as a coach. For Edsall, this could be just the beginning. At one point, though, they started together.
