Georgia Tech sophomore safety Fred Holton is expected to miss the 2011 season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in Saturday morning's practice, the school announced on Monday night.
Holton played in all 13 games last season as a true freshman and was competing for a starting job in the secondary. Despite the fact that Georgia Tech had to replace all four starters in the secondary, the Jackets still have a talented and experienced group of defensive backs.
Holton was the team's No. 3 safety behind Isaiah Johnson and Rashaad Reid, but Holton had a great offseason and would have also contributed on special teams.
