ACC upset watch: Week 10

11/1/2011

Six. Six games listed at No. 1 on this list have fallen in nine weeks. Last Tuesday, the Clemson-Georgia Tech game was ranked No. 1. Will the streak end in Week 10? I’ll be honest, with Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Clemson off this week, true upsets are a bit of a stretch, as no ranked teams are playing. There are three games, though, which look conducive to an ACC surprise:

1. North Carolina at NC State. Flip a coin. NC State has won the past four games in this series, but North Carolina looks like the better team. The Wolfpack has home field advantage, but that didn’t help much against Georgia Tech. Both quarterbacks have played well. On paper, UNC has only won one more conference game than NC State. How much is really separating these two programs right now? Both have losing records in the conference. Based on how they both played last week, you would think UNC gets the win, but history says otherwise.

2. Duke at Miami. You can almost guarantee that Duke will put a scare into the Canes, just like they did with Stanford. And Virginia Tech. And Wake Forest. But can they actually close the deal? Miami is coming off a loss to Virginia, so the Canes will either be down and out, or they’re be as angry as their head coach. Duke continues to beat itself with turnovers and mistakes, but if the Blue Devils can put together a clean game on the road, Miami could be in trouble.

3. Florida State at Boston College. No, I don’t think BC is going to win, but I am willing to give them a chance. It’s a Thursday night home game for the Eagles, a long trip for Florida State on a short week, and BC is coming off its first ACC win of the season. The Eagles have shown improvement on the offensive line in recent weeks, and got their running game going at Maryland. FSU’s defense is one of the best in the country, though, and as long as the Noles are focused and don’t make silly mistakes, the Noles should win their fourth straight.
