Inside the numbers: UNC at Virginia Tech

ESPN's Stats & Info department took a closer look inside the numbers to preview tonight's matchup between Virginia Tech and North Carolina. Here's a look at what they found:

Wilson gets yards in bunches

Virginia Tech running back David Wilson ran for a career-high 175 yards on 23 carries last Thursday against Georgia Tech, including four runs of 15 yards or longer. It was his most runs of 15-plus yards in a game against a FBS opponent. For the season, Wilson has 27 carries of 15 yards or longer -- most in the FBS.

UNC stingy against big runs

North Carolina has only allowed 10 runs of 15 yards or longer this season, including five games when it did not allow any. Only Alabama and Louisiana Tech have had more games without allowing a 15-plus yard run.

Hokies’ defense stout once again

Virginia Tech has held its opponents to no gain or a loss on 42.2 percent of plays this season, the best percentage in the ACC and third-best in FBS. The Hokies have ranked among the top 10 in FBS in this stat in three of the past five seasons and they have not been outside the top 20 in six seasons.
