Here are some interesting numbers for you pertaining to the ACC and its bowl season:
.667 —Though Wake Forest has only been to nine bowl games, the Deacons have won six of them, a .667 winning percentage. After this year’s trip to the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, coach Jim Grobe will have guided the Deacons to exactly half (five) of their all-time bowl trips in his 11 years on campus.
1 —Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd needs just one touchdown pass or a rushing touchdown against West Virginia to tie the ACC single-season record for touchdown responsibility. Boyd currently has 36 TDR this year, including 31 touchdown passes and 5 rushing scores. NC State’s Philip Rivers set the record with 37 TDR in 2003 and former NC State quarterback Russell Wilson tied that mark in 2009.
3 —The ACC has three of the top five current consecutive bowl streaks in the nation. Florida State, which is making its 30th straight bowl trip, leads the nation. Virginia Tech is third (19) and Georgia Tech is tied with rival Georgia for fourth (15). Boston College, which had its streak of 12 straight bowl games snapped this year, was tied for the seventh-longest streak.
5 —Counting last year’s Sun Bowl and this year’s Dec. 29 Champs Sports Bowl, Notre Dame has played five ACC opponents in a 14-game span. The Irish defeated Miami in last year’s Sun Bowl, and beat Wake Forest, Maryland and Boston College earlier this season. Notre Dame and will face Florida State in this year’s Champs Sports Bowl.
6 —Six of the ACC’s 12 starting quarterbacks hail from the state of Virginia and all six have led their teams to bowl games this year including Clemson’s Tajh Boyd (Discover Orange), Virginia Tech’s Logan Thomas (Allstate Sugar), Virginia’s Michael Rocco (Chick-fi l-A), Florida State’s EJ Manuel (Champs Sports), NC State’s Michael Glennon (Belk) and North Carolina’s Bryn Renner (Advocare V100 Independence).
30 — The number of years since Clemson has appeared in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers’ last appearance was after the 1981 season when Clemson downed Nebraska 22-15 in the 1982 Orange Bowl to complete a perfect 12-0 season and clinch the school’s first and only national title.
55 —ACC runners have topped the 100-yard rushing mark in a game a total of 55 times this year, tying the ACC’s all-time high which was set last year. Clemson’s Andre Ellington had the tying performance with 125 yards against Virginia Tech in the ACC title game.
90 —Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel has thrown 90 consecutive passes without an interception. His current streak began early in the third quarter against NC State and has included games with Boston College, Miami, Virginia and Florida.
127 —Wake Forest quarterback Tanner Price enters the Deacons’ bowl game against Mississippi State having thrown 127 passes without an interception. The streak covers Wake’s final four regular season games against Notre Dame, Clemson, Maryland and Vanderbilt.
