Earlier this morning, we looked at some of the ACC’s best coaches, based on their total number of wins at their respective schools. The numbers don’t always tell the entire story, though. Longevity, the state of the program when the coaches were hired, championships and winning percentages should all be considered. What’s indisputable is that no coach won more games at that school than the ones featured this morning. That individual success helped give an identity to each program. George Welsh is synonymous with Virginia. Bobby Dodd Stadium is on Bobby Dodd Way. And Howard’s Rock is a constant reminder of who built that program.
Nobody in the country, though, has had more consecutive 10-win seasons than Frank Beamer. And Bobby Bowden won two national titles. Is it even fair to say one has been more valuable to his program than the other? Probably not. What we can debate, though, is which program is best defined by its most successful coach.
In that case, you have to consider Duke, which plays in Wallace Wade Stadium and, according to the numbers, didn’t have a winning percentage over .500 without him. It certainly isn’t Miami’s Andy Gustafson. And Wake Forest is more Jim Grobe than D.C. Walker, just as Maryland seems to be more Ralph Friedgen than Curley Byrd. Clemson fans might argue their program has best been defined by the success of Danny Ford, not Frank Howard.
You get the final say, though. I’ve narrowed it down to five choices. Cast your votes now.
