Florida State has the talent. It has the defense. It has the depth and it has the quarterback. The offensive line? Psh. They’ll be fine. On paper, you’re looking at a team that can contend for a national title.
But do the Noles have the discipline?
To me, that’s the biggest question that needs to be raised with this group. I’m talking about on AND off the field. If guys can’t restrain themselves on Twitter, how much do you think they’ll be holding back on the field? Coach Jimbo Fisher has had to ban his players from Twitter for the second time since he’s been hired, according to the Orlando Sentinel. He has also had to deal with the highly-publicized arrests of running back James Wilder Jr. and cornerback Greg Reid. Granted, Fisher is hardly the only coach in the country -- or the ACC for that matter -- who has had to deal with negative news this offseason, but if Florida State is going to win the ACC and a national title, discipline cannot be a question.
Questionable character often translates into late hits, roughing the kicker, helmet-to-helmet and other costly penalties. There’s no doubt that some of Florida State’s penalties last year were controversial, but not all 103 of them. The Noles were No. 118 in the country in penalties last year. Only Arizona State had more (104).
Does the ACC have a national title contender this year? I don’t know: Does FSU have the discipline to be one?
