North Carolina junior linebacker Darius Lipford suffered an injury to his left anterior cruciate ligament during a rehab session last week and will miss the 2012 season, the school reported.

Lipford, who started four games at outside linebacker in 2011, originally injured the knee in December during the Tar Heels' loss to Missouri in the Independence Bowl. He will undergo reconstructive surgery next month.

Lipford will redshirt this season and have two years of eligibility remaining.
