Sophomore safety Matt Robinson had to leave Tuesday's practice with a shoulder injury, according to the team's practice report. The severity of Robinson’s injury wasn’t available. Robinson missed all but the first three games of last year with a shoulder injury and was limited this spring after undergoing offseason surgery. Before his season-ending injury, Robinson ranked second in the ACC and tied for seventh nationally with 12 tackles per game.
In his absence on Tuesday, true freshman Sean Davis took reps with the first team.
“It’s unfortunate with Matt in terms of what happened to him, and we’ll see where [his injury] is," coach Randy Edsall said, according to the report. "But like I said, it’s a great message and a great lesson for all these other guys to say, ‘Hey, I’ve got to be out here doing everything that the coaches want me to do and executing the proper way because I’m going to get an opportunity sometime when I least expect it.’”
BACKUP QB RACE
“Right now Perry is the No. 2 guy,” said Edsall. “He’s a little bit ahead of Caleb right now… there is still really good competition right now but Perry is a little ahead. [Perry’s] overall command and presence on the field in terms of running everything and not making as many mental mistakes put him ahead.”
True freshman receiver Stefon Diggs has been taking first-team reps at punt returner and kick returner and has impressed Edsall.
“He’s shown that he can do things,” said Edsall. “We’ve just got to continue to coach him up and teach him all the little intricacies of being a return guy, but also how to read blocks -- not only the people coming down and how to set some of those things up. He’s a quick learner and I’ve been very pleased with his poise in terms of catching the ball and understanding everything that I’m looking for in a return guy because I’m the guy that coaches those guys.”
RUNNING BACK UPDATE
Edsall said that if the season were to start today, redshirt freshman Brandon Ross would be the starter at running back.
“There are just some things [Ross has] done, he’s been very consistent," Edsall said. "There’s a lot of things we still have to work with him on but he really did some really good things. And then I thought that Wes [Brown] and Albert [Reid] did some good things there in the scrimmage. So right now this week we’ve got Brandon and Justus [Pickett] working with the ones and Albert and Wes working with the twos.”
