A true freshman at quarterback. Two true freshmen at running back. And a true freshman receiver shouldering expectations to be one of if not the best player on the team.
To say Maryland will look young in its season opener against William & Mary might be an understatement.
“I think this year I’ll probably play more true freshman than I have any time in my career as a head coach,” Randy Edsall said.
That includes at quarterback, where Perry Hills will make his first career start -- heck, take his first collegiate snap -- in place of injured starter C.J. Brown. Maryland fans will also see rookies at running back, where Wes Brown and Albert Reid are likely to play in the opener. And receiver Stefon Diggs has proven too talented to keep off the field. Diggs is expected to return punts and kicks, and contribute as a backup wideout.
“With guys playing on special teams, we could have quite a few (true freshmen) who are going to play,” Edsall said. “My history has been we’re always going to play the best players we have. If a true freshman is the best player, we’ll do that.”
