Week 2 sneak peek

September, 3, 2012
Here’s a sneak peek at the top three games of Week 2:

1. North Carolina at Wake Forest: It’s the only conference game on the schedule, so it automatically gets the top billing. North Carolina is coming off a complete performance in a 62-0 drubbing of Elon, but it was against Elon, so it was little more than a glorified practice run of Larry Fedora’s spread offense. It was impressive nonetheless, as running back Giovani Bernard scored a touchdown rushing, receiving and from a punt return – all in the first half. Wake Forest, meanwhile, struggled to beat Liberty, 20-17. The Deacs trailed 20-17 late in the third quarter. That’s not going to fly against an in-state ACC opponent.

2. Miami at No. 22 Kansas State: The Hurricanes are coming off a gutsy road win at Boston College that gave them a 1-0 start in the ACC race. It was a good, much-needed win for a program filled with young faces. Now they’ll have to carry that confidence on the road again against a top-25 program they lost to at home a year ago. True freshman running back Duke Johnson made a name for himself with two touchdowns, but Miami’s pass protection was nonexistent. They’ll have to have a more complete game to pull off the upset.

3. Penn State at Virginia: This game is intriguing because of Penn State’s ongoing story line, as the Nittany Lions will play their first road game under first-year coach Bill O’Brien and try to avoid an 0-2 start. The Hoos are coming off an impressive performance in a 43-19 win over Richmond. Quarterback Michael Rocco threw for over 300 yards, and UVA racked up 545 yards of total offense. For Penn State, an emotional ride will continue into Charlottesville.
