My pick for player of the week is Florida State running back Chris Thompson.

First, let me say right off the top what an incredible comeback story Thompson is this season. Last year against Wake Forest, he broke two vertebrae in his back, and many thought his career would be over. Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher recalled recently that it was Thompson consoling him as the two sat together in a North Carolina hospital.

Thompson vowed he would be back. Boy, was his return more like a welcome back party -- against the very team he got hurt against last season.

In his first extended action of the season, Thompson ran all over the Wake Forest defense, running for a career-high 197 yards and two long touchdowns in the first half alone. No player in Florida State history has ever run for that many yards in the first half. He helped put the game so far out of reach, Thompson got to sit for the entire second half.

"There was nothing like it, I have been pretty much waiting for this moment for a while," Thompson said after the game. "To open up against an ACC team and for it to be the Wake game was such a big deal due to the fact of what happened last year."

Thompson gave Florida State the big-play capability out of the backfield that has long been missing from this team. The assignment gets much tougher this week against No. 10 Clemson, but seeing Thompson back out on the field and better than ever has got to give him and the Noles a huge lift.

"I was telling you last year how big of a guy we were missing," Fisher said. "Not only the plays he makes, but the stability he brings – assignments, coaching, what he does, 'Hey, you’ve got this, you’ve got that.' He's a brilliant guy, too. That guy is rock solid and he's a big-time player."
