There was a pretty easy choice for ACC player of the week: Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco.

Here you have a player who began the season as a starter, then lost his job after five games, then got an another opportunity to prove himself when coach Mike London unveiled his two-quarterback system against NC State two weeks ago. The roller coaster ride is enough to make you dizzy.

But Rocco made the most of his second chance against Miami last Saturday en route to a career day in a thrilling 41-40 comeback victory that gave the Hoos their second straight win. Rocco threw the game-winning 10-yard touchdown pass to Jake McGee with 6 seconds remaining to cap one of the best days of his career.

Rocco went 29-of-37 for 300 yards and threw a career-high four touchdown passes. He had a school-record 18 straight completions, and also set career high for completions. Really, not a bad day for a guy who had to sit on the sideline and watch while Phillip Sims got his turn last month.

"Michael has done an outstanding job the last couple games," coach Mike London said after the game. "We talk about how selfless he is. He’s a team player. He wants to win. He has a great relationship with Phil (Sims). No one cares about who gets the credit; we just want to win ball games. He has a great understanding of the offense. Part of this time that we traveled down this season, you have to ask him, but it may have been a benefit to him as far as watching but also competing.

"The thing that makes everyone better is when you have to compete. Like I said, I think that may be a record, and very deserving. He’s a great teammate. I think he and Jake McGee are best friends. That’s probably why Jake got so many catches. He’s looking out for his best friend.”
