NC State is the latest school to join a growing list of ACC programs to support Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich in his fight against a rare form of cancer, Ewing's Sarcoma.
For the two weeks prior to the Duke game, NC State’s football players gave up their per diem and raised over $2,000 and Wolfpack fans added over $5,000 last Saturday at the Duke game. The money will be presented this weekend at the game in Chestnut Hill to Uplifting Athletes, which has a chapter at BC that is raising the money for the Ewing’s Sarcoma research. This particular donation has an added personal touch to it, as Herzlich and former BC coach Tom O'Brien still keep in touch.
Virginia Tech, Clemson and Florida State have also contributed to the fund.
The ACC's generosity can be found beyond the story in Chestnut Hill this week, though.
Every Thursday, Virginia coach Al Groh has a teleconference, and Thursday today, Richmond radio host Wes McElroy revealed to the other media members that he is raising money on his show for breast cancer awareness. As a way to get people to donate to the cause, McElroy said on his show that if they hit the monetary goal, he would shave his head.
When Groh got on the line, he was told that McElroy would likely be bald in the Georgia Tech post game press conference on Oct. 24. At that point, McElroy said he still needed $250 to reach the donation goal for his head to be shaved. Groh said he would pay the difference and told McElroy where to call following the teleconference and noted that he wasn't doing it to make McElroy shave his head but because it was a cause he believed strongly in.
I'm not going to get all sappy on you, but it is awesome to see the ACC's coaches and players making such a positive impact off the field, whether it's to help one of their own or others. It's gestures like those that can make a bigger impact than their win-loss records ever will.
