Virginia Tech All-ACC cornerback Antone Exum has torn his right ACL and lateral meniscus and will miss the next six-to-nine months, the school announced on Sunday. Head athletic trainer Mike Goforth said he hopes surgery is possible as early as Thursday for Exum, who will be evaluated daily.
This is just devastating news to Exum, who recently announced that he would return to school for his senior season instead of leaving early for the NFL draft. Exum was a much-improved player in the second half of 2012, and punctuated his progression with an impressive performance in the Russell Athletic Bowl win over Rutgers. His interception in the fourth quarter earned him the game's MVP award, and he was named to ESPN.com's all-bowl team. Exum was recently was named one of ESPN.com's Top 25 players of 2012, checking in at No. 22.
Exum led the ACC and was No. 2 in the nation with 21 passes defended. He also tied for the league lead with five interceptions. After moving from safety to cornerback, Exum finished the season with 48 tackles and two forced fumbles.
