NC State freshman cornerback Rashard Smith and redshirt sophomore defensive end Jeff Rieskamp will miss the rest of the season due to injuries.

Smith, who had moved back into the starting lineup for the Boston College game, injured his knee in the second quarter of that game. Rieskamp, who started two games in 2008, underwent surgery on Oct. 16 for a sports hernia. He has not seen action in a game all season because of the injury.

The loss of Smith is a significant hit to an already inconsistent secondary and struggling defense.

Those two players bring the total of players lost for the season due to injury to nine for the Wolfpack. They join TE Mario Carter (knee), LB Ryan Cheek (hip), OL Denzelle Good (shoulder), LB Nate Irving (leg), FB Colby Jackson (knee), QB Everett Proctor (shoulder) and S Javon Walker (knee).

Although injuries have piled up for the third straight year under coach Tom O'Brien, they're not enough of an excuse this year for the backwards path the Pack has taken in the ACC.
