Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder intends to play on Saturday against Clemson, despite some lingering discomfort from sore ribs he suffered in the win over NC State, according to the team's latest practice report. Offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said Ponder can still be as effective even if he has to play with some pain.

"He's a tough nut now," said Fisher. "This guy is as tough as I've coached and been around."

Considering the Atlantic Division standings will be on the line on Saturday, it's not surprising Ponder will do what it takes to get on the field. If Florida State wins, the Noles will have gone from last place in the division to second place in a matter of three weeks. That's quite a run, and the Noles know they couldn't have done it without Ponder, who leads the ACC in passing yards and total offense. Remember, though, Ponder suffered a similar injury last season, and it did affect his play down the stretch.

Ponder told me on Saturday night the injury was "definitely a little painful," but then said, "It's not bad. I wouldn’t say it was any worse than last year. It will be all right. I’ll get treatment on it.”

There's no question Ponder will show up. The only question now is whether or not the defense will.
