Florida State? You’re off the list (bye week). Clemson? You’re off the list, too.
Welcome to the Top 25, Hokies – and the upset watch.
The No. 1 game on this list last week came to fruition, as Virginia fell to Ball State of the MAC. That was the only one of the four, as Miami, Florida State and Clemson all won their respective games and further separated from the rest of the conference. Sorry, BC, we like you -- but we don’t think you’re that scary in Death Valley.
Here’s a look at the top teams in the ACC most likely to fall in Week 7:
1. Pitt at No. 24 Virginia Tech: This will be the first meeting of the two programs as members of the ACC, but they have history as members of the Big East. Virginia Tech leads the series 4-1 at home, but the Hokies have lost four straight to Pitt, including last year’s 35-17 win by the Panthers. It’s a very similar situation, as last season, many weren't giving the Panthers a shot against the Hokies. Virginia Tech was bringing a highly-touted defense to Pittsburgh, had won 13 straight true road games, and was ranked No. 13 in the country. Didn’t matter. Pitt won up front on both sides and proved they could handle one of the best teams in the ACC. The Panthers are now right in the mix of the Coastal Division race, and have a young and talented offense that will be a great matchup for the Hokies’ secondary.
2. Virginia at Maryland: The Cavaliers are not good, but they’re catching the Terps at a good time. Quarterback C.J. Brown is day-to-day with a concussion, and the Terps are trying to regroup after a 63-0 drubbing by Florida State in Tallahassee. While Virginia’s ACC rival is Virginia Tech, Maryland has long considered the Hoos a border rival and an important opponent to beat as far as recruiting neighboring territory. This is the end of an era, as Maryland will be moving to the Big Ten next year, and the teams have split the past 12 games. This is a game Maryland needs to win to get its confidence back after the loss to FSU, and it’s a game it should win considering UVa has one of the worst offenses in the country. That doesn’t mean, though, that UVa can’t find a way.
