There are plenty of reasons for Coastal Division winner Georgia Tech to be feeling good about itself this week heading into Saturday’s home game against rival Georgia:
And yet those within Georgia Tech’s program insist there’s no worry the Jackets will head into this game feeling overconfident, despite the struggles the Bulldogs have had and the glutton of success the Jackets’ have enjoyed. Much like Clemson, it’s been a while since Georgia Tech has won an ACC title, but those within the program insist the only focus right now is Georgia.
“If you look at Georgia, they’re still a good team,” said defensive end Derrick Morgan. “Like coach (Dave) Wommack said in our meeting, they’re two or three plays away in a couple of their losses from having a really great record. We’re not underestimating them. We’re never overconfident. We remain humble, even though we’ve had a pretty good deal of success this year.”
It’s gotten even better over the past seven games.
Georgia Tech has averaged 41.1 points, 343.9 yards rushing and 485.3 yards of total offense. Tech’s average time of possession during that span has been 35:36. But coach Paul Johnson said “all you have to do is turn the tape on” to know Georgia is still a good football team.
“Our whole focus is on Georgia right now, as well as it should be,” Johnson said Sunday. “If not, we’ll get embarrassed.”
- Georgia Tech ranked No. 7 in the BCS standings and is one week away from playing for the conference championship. Georgia has lost two of its past three and is aiming for a pedestrian seventh win.
- Only one other team in the country, Miami (Ohio), has a worse turnover margin than Georgia, which is at minus-18.
- Opponents have scored 102 points off the Bulldogs’ 26 turnovers.
- Georgia has one of the worst scoring defenses in the SEC, allowing 26.64 points per game. Georgia Tech is averaging 36 points per game.
