Just when it looked as if things were finally going in the right direction for the Virginia Cavaliers, fullback Rashawn Jackson is facing felony charges in connection with a campus burglary committed in 2007.
Yes, this happened almost a year ago, but it still happened, and it's a distraction the team does not need while riding a four-game winning streak into this weekend's home game against Miami. It's also another blemish on coach Al Groh's record, no matter how many games he wins.
This did not affect Jackson's status on the football team, and while it is understandable to let the legal process play out, it is also important to note that these are felony charges. Those don't fall under the category of "kids being kids" in college.
It's unfortunate for Virginia, because it seemed as if once former quarterback Peter Lalich transferred, the off-field problems finally disappeared with him. Winning might cure everything, but it can't hide everything.
