ACC's coaching carousel

The ACC has dodged a few major coaching changes this offseason, namely David Cutliffe’s interest in Tennessee and the firing of Ralph Friedgen at Maryland, but it wouldn’t be the offseason without the traditional coaching carousel. There will be two new head coaches in the conference in 2010 in FSU’s Jimbo Fisher and Virginia’s Mike London. That makes nine new head coaches who have taken over since the start of the 2007 season, and six who currently have fewer than three full seasons in the books. Only Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Maryland have kept their bosses in place since the 2006 season.

So far this offseason, the ACC has had to replace two head coaches, four defensive coordinators and four recruiting coordinators.

It’s not easy keeping track of all of the offseason movement, so here’s a breakdown of who’s out and who’s in for 2010:

DUKE

Who’s out: Defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre

Who’s in: Jim Knowles, the head coach at Cornell for the past six seasons and a member of Cutcliffe's staff at Ole Miss in 2003.He will serve as defensive coordinator/safeties, but Marion Hobby was promoted and will call the plays. Hobby was promoted to assistant head coach/defensive coordinator (formerly defensive coordinator/defensive line) and Jim Collins was promoted to assistant defensive coordinator/linebackers (formerly assistant coach/linebackers).

FLORIDA STATE

Who’s out: Former head coach Bobby Bowden, defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews, linebackers coach Chuck Amato, defensive ends coach Jody Allen, running backs coach Dexter Carter, strength and conditioning coach Todd Stroud.

Who’s in: Jimbo Fisher, defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, linebackers coach Greg Hudson, running backs coach Eddie Gran, quarterbacks coach/recruiting coordinator Dameyune Craig, defensive ends coach D.J. Eliot and strength coach Vic Viloria.

GEORGIA TECH

Who’s out: Defensive coordinator Dave Wommack, recruiting coordinator/defensive line coach Giff Smith, A-backs coach Jeff Monken, linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary.

Who’s in: Defensive coordinator Al Groh, defensive line/recruiting coordinator Andy McCollum, Lamar Owens, a graduate assistant coach at Georgia Tech in 2009 and an intern in 2008, was named assistant coach in charge of the A-Backs. Paul Johnson still needs to make one more hire.

MIAMI

Who’s out: Recruiting coordinator/defensive line coach Clint Hurtt and running backs coach Tommie Robinson.

Who’s in: Defensive line coach Rick Petri, running backs coach Mike Cassano.

NC STATE

Who’s out: Linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator Andy McCollum.

Who’s in: TBD.

VIRGINIA

Who’s out: Former coach Al Groh, offensive coordinator Gregg Brandon, defensive line coach Chad Wilt, linebackers coach Bob Trott, receivers coach Latrell Scott, tight ends/recruiting coordinator Bob Price, running backs coach Wayne Lineburg, offensive line coach Dave Borbely, special teams coordinator Ron Prince.

Who’s in: Coach Mike London, associate head coach/defensive coordinator Jim Reid, defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator Jeff Hanson, linebackers coach Vincent Brown, receivers coach Shawn Moore, cornerbacks coach Chip West, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks Bill Lazor, running backs Mike Faragalli, tight ends coach Scott Wachenheim.
