ACC recruiting nuggets

Remember that lunchtime link that said Newport News running back Clifton Richardson was a "soft commitment" to the Cavaliers? Well, just wanted to let Virginia fans know that ESPN Recruiting has listed Richardson as a commitment:
Virginia has received a Class of 2011 pledge from ESPNU 150 Watch List athlete Clifton Richardson of Menchville (Newport News, Va.).

The 6-foot, 195-pound running back/receiver/defensive back has also been offered by Maryland, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Louisville and East Carolina.

Richardson rushed for 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior, posted 200 receiving yards, returned two kickoffs for scores and made 10 tackles per game.

He is the third player to commit to the Cavs for 2011.

If Richardson winds up sticking with Mike London, that's a huge get for the first-year coach and a great example of this staff's recruiting abilities. Richardson is exactly the kind of player Virginia needs -- an athlete, somebody who can play any and every position.

Duke and North Carolina also added commitments this past weekend.

The Tar Heels have added their second commitment for the 2011 class, according to ESPN Recruiting, with athlete T.J. Thorpe of Jordan (Durham, N.C.). Thorpe was recruited as a receiver/kicker returner, and also had early offers from Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Wake Forest and East Carolina.

Duke lost Thorpe to its rival, but gained a pledge from 6-foot-5, 225-pound tight end Brendan Downs of Tennessee High in Bristol, Tenn. He was also offered by Maryland, Memphis and Baylor. The Blue Devils now have three commitments.
