It's a good thing Re'quan Boyette is healthy again, because the Blue Devils just lost a significant contributor at running back in Tony Jackson, who was dismissed from the team on Wednesday "for failing to uphold the standard of conduct expected of a Blue Devil football student-athlete."
Jackson, a converted safety, played in 11 games and started three last year, rushing 76 times for 259 yards while catching 12 passes for an additional 106 yards and one touchdown. As a true freshman in 2007, he appeared in all 12 games -- primarily on special teams -- as a reserve defensive back.
The bulk of the carries will now go to Boyette and Jay Hollingsworth, who led the Blue Devils in rushing with 399 yards while catching 25 passes for an additional 188 yards and two touchdowns last season. Hollingsworth became the first true freshman to lead the team in rushing since B.J. Hill in 1998.
I'm not sure what Jackson's specific offense was, but it's clear David Cutcliffe doesn't have a high tolerance level for any players who step out of line. He's also dismissed freshman linebacker Trent Mackey, and sophomore defensive back Eddie Morgan.
