Strong spring for Hokies' new QB

Virginia Tech's staff has been glowing this spring about first-year starting quarterback Logan Thomas.

Flawless? No. But "farther along" than where quarterbacks coach Mike O'Cain had expected him to be.

Fans got a chance to see why on Saturday in the Hokies' spring game at Lane Stadium, where Thomas threw for 131 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions to lead the Maroon team to a 27-0 win over the White team. Thomas got off to a slow start, but that seemed to be the anomaly this spring. In all of the scrimmages this spring, Thomas completed 50 of 91 passes for 743 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions.

Not bad for a rookie starter.

In the spring game, Thomas completed 10 of 21 passes and he also rushed for a game-high 37 yards.

This was a critical spring for Thomas, who will replace the winningest quarterback in school history in Tyrod Taylor, and regardless of what the numbers were from Saturday's scrimmage, all indications are that Thomas has what it takes to lead the offense this fall.
