ACC breakout players: North Carolina

The series continues today with North Carolina ...

A reminder of how we're defining breakout players: players who haven't seen the field yet but showed they could be major contributors this fall; players who have seen limited time but could earn significantly bigger roles this season; and players who have started but could blossom into stars. The top candidates at North Carolina:

Bryn Renner, QB: He's tasked with replacing a record-setting four-year starter in T.J. Yates, but Renner had a good spring and distanced himself from the other quarterbacks as the undisputed leader of the offense. Renner has been in the program two seasons, but he has only played in three games and has two pass attempts. A talented offensive line and veteran group of receivers should help Renner flourish in his first season as a starter.

Tre Boston, S: He was forced to play as a true freshman last year, and this spring moved from corner to free safety. He played in 10 games last year and started four, but his season was derailed when he sprained his ankle against Miami and missed the next three games. Still, he finished the season with 32 tackles, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and an interception. Three starters must be replaced in the secondary this fall, so there's plenty of opportunity for Boston to make a name for himself.
