Upset watch: Week 2

It happened last week, but not in the game I expected it.

Despite the resignation of its head coach in late August, Richmond still found a way to beat Duke, and the ACC stumbled against an FCS opponent for the third straight season.

Is there another upset brewing in Week 2? Notice one trend in all of these games -- they’re all on the road.

Here’s a look at which teams need to be on alert, in order of most concern:

1. Virginia Tech at East Carolina: It’s on the road, and East Carolina just gave South Carolina quite a scare. The Pirates had a 24-14 halftime lead over the defending SEC East champs, and they defeated NC State last year in overtime. There’s a good chance, though, that Virginia Tech running back David Wilson has a similar day to that of South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore, who ran for 112 yards and three touchdowns. Why should Virginia Tech be the most concerned? Because it has the most to lose.

2. Boston College at Central Florida: The Eagles are coming off a disappointing loss to Northwestern, and UCF is confident after a 62-0 romp of Charleston Southern. The Knights scored on their first five possessions and set a school record with eight rushing touchdowns. Not a good sign for a BC defense that just allowed an uncharacteristic 424 total yards and 227 rushing yards. The Eagles should be concerned because a loss would put a serious damper on their bowl hopes.

3. Georgia Tech at Middle Tennessee: ACC teams have struggled against the Blue Raiders before, and they’re coming off an impressive performance in a near-win against Purdue. The Boilermakers trailed for the majority of the game, and the Blue Raiders racked up 460 yards of total offense. The Jackets’ defense will be tested, as will their ability to hold onto the ball.
