UNC's Matt Merletti has successful surgery
By ESPN.com staff
UNC senior safety Matt Merletti had successful arthroscopic surgery to remove loose cartilage in his left knee on Tuesday at UNC Hospitals, the school announced on Wednesday. Merletti's knee ligaments were evaluated and surgical reconstruction was not required. His playing status will be updated at the beginning of Carolina's bowl practice in December.
Merletti sprained his MCL and ACL and wasn't expected to return this season, according to the school's original release. In 2009, Merletti tore the ACL in his right knee during preseason practice and received a medical redshirt.
