McGee: Deacs on brink of turning corner

ESPN The Magazine's Ryan McGee named five programs that are on the verge of turning the corner, and Wake Forest made the cut.

It's a good pick, considering the Deacs were just a field goal away from playing for the ACC title last year -- a remarkable turnaround from the 3-9 finish in 2010 -- but there were still too many opportunities the team let slip away last year. Here's an excerpt from McGee's piece:

Everyone being back on the same page philosophy-wise might be what finally gets the Deacs over a hump that isn't as tall you might think. Their season-opening loss to Syracuse came mainly because [Tanner] Price got hurt and they pushed Notre Dame and Clemson, losing those two games by one score each.  "Anyone who watched us knows how close we came to winning nine, 10 games," [Jim] Grobe said last week.  "It's been a while since we were that close."

The tallest task for the Deacs this spring will be rebuilding the offensive line. If Wake Forest can find a way to replace four starters there and bolster the depth at running back, it could be another surprise contender in the Atlantic Division race.
