Hokies battle back vs. Duke
By Heather Dinich
Order has been restored.
Virginia Tech is no longer looking up at Duke in the Coastal Division standings.
The Hokies scored 41 unanswered points to put a screeching halt to the Blue Devils' magic and beat Duke 41-20. Virginia Tech overcame another slow start and a 20-point deficit to avoid further embarrassment in the ACC race. Instead, this could be a turning point for the Hokies, who were picked as the Coastal Division favorites. With only one league loss, Virginia Tech is in much better shape than its overall 4-3 record might indicate. After all, the Hokies' only league loss so far is to the postseason-ineligible Tar Heels.
Remember 2010, when Virginia Tech started out 0-2 with a loss to James Madison? Virginia Tech fans thought the season was over, only to watch their program rally to one of the most remarkable comebacks in ACC history. The Hokies rattled off 11 straight wins to win the ACC title and play in the Discover Orange Bowl. Lesson learned: Never count out Virginia Tech.
As for Duke, the season is far from over. In order to truly be different, though, they have to play different. Duke had four turnovers against Virginia Tech last season, too.
The Blue Devils still have five more chances to become bowl eligible. As long as they don't let this loss beat them five more times, the season will be a success.
