North Carolina unveils uniform changes

By Andrea Adelson

North Carolina promised to unveil its new, cooler, sleeker uniforms during its spring game this past weekend.

The color black is used more in UNC's new uniforms.
The much-hyped unveiling did not disappoint. In working with Nike, the Tar Heels made some modifications to their home and away jerseys. But the headline-grabber was an all-black alternate uniform -- with a black helmet -- the team will wear for its Thursday night home game against Miami, which the Tar Heels are billing as "Zero Dark Thursday."

The Oct. 17 game marks just the second ESPN Thursday night home game in school history.

Here is more from the school's press release:
The all-black uniform marks he first installment of the new "Tar Pit Series," which will feature an alternate uniform or helmet for one game each year. This year's alternate uniform color has been taken from the black tar in the Tar Heel logo.

"Our kids are excited about the new uniforms," said head coach Larry Fedora. "They saw them for the first time Friday and they are fired up about wearing them this year. We wanted to design a uniform that connected our team to The Tar Pit, our name for the student section. Make no mistake, Carolina Blue and white will always be our traditional colors."

Indeed, the Carolina blue top and white pant will remain the traditional home uniform. The away uniform will be all white. Among the changes that have been made: the Carolina blue top has black numbers; the white jersey has black numbers; a new customized font and typeface make names easier to read and more visible down field; and the stripes on the uniform pant and shoulders reflect the lines from a ram's horn.

The Nike design team worked with Fedora and players in coming up with the new uniforms. One additional feature -- Fedora's mantra to be "smart, fast and physical" on every play is embroidered on the back neckline of the jersey.

In all, I like the new looks. What do you all think?
