FSU has productive first camp session

By Corey Dowlar

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State's summer camps have been hit or miss in recent years with commitments. But when they come, they come in flurries.

Such was the case with this first session. The Seminoles landed a bunch of commitments that grew their 2014, and 2015, classes.

NEW COMMITS

CB Malique Jackson (Jesup, Ga./Wayne County)
Committed: June 15

Jackson wasn't really on the radar coming into last week. He had a couple of offers, most notably from Cincinnati, Missouri and N.C. State. But when defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Jeremy Pruitt worked him out extensively. He met the physical requirements of size and speed, and an offer came. Jackson jumped on it, and the rest is history.

Mavin Saunders
Houston tight end Mavin Saunders was part of a commit flurry at FSU's camp.
LS Stephen Gabbard (Tallahassee, Fla./Godby)
Committed: June 15

Taking a long snapper out of high school on scholarship isn't a regular activity for Florida State. It usually awards a walk-on snapper that scholarship once he takes over the starting duties. But Gabbard, as one of the top long snapper prospects in the country, proved worthy and joined the class during the camp session.

OT Ethan Frith (Summit, Miss./North Pike)
Committed: June 14

Frith dropped about 30 pounds since the last time the coaches had seen him in person. He moved better, was quicker and dominated opponents in one-on-one drills. Offensive line coach Rick Trickett, who already had offered him, was very impressed. The coaching staff pushed for a commitment and got its first offensive tackle of the 2014 class.

TE Mavin Saunders (Houston/Kinkaid School)
Committed: June 15

Saunders was tight ends coach Tim Brewster's main target from the very beginning. The new assistant, known for his Twitter displays and recruiting ability, was able to get Saunders on campus during the camp session, though he didn't actually work out. Saunders didn't really leave it a secret that he liked Florida State, so it wasn't too much of a surprise when he committed on his visit.

WR Ryan Sousa (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona)
Committed: June 13

Sousa was a well-known commodity going into the camp session. With a handful of early offers, he is a talent that some schools had high on their boards. He lit up the stat sheet for Lake Nona every Friday night, and did so as one of the only targets on its offense. FSU likes his ability to do precise and specific things within its offense out of the slot and went ahead and offered. A commitment came shortly thereafter.

DE Marlon Gonzalez (Cape Coral, Fla./Island Coast) (Class of 2015)
Committed: June 14

Gonzalez became the third commitment for the Class of 2015 at FSU's camp. He worked out for defensive line coaches Sal Sunseri and Odell Haggins who both liked what they saw. Gonzalez only had an offer from Florida Atlantic coming in. He is a former high school teammate of Seminoles running back Mario Pender.

New names that emerged on the radar: 2015 WR Deon Cain, 2015 RB Traveon Samuel, 2014 TE Chris Herndon, 2014 OL Dyshon Sims, 2016 DE Shane Simmons.
