ACC announces academic team
By Heather Dinich
Congrats to the top scholars in the ACC, the players who found a way to excel on the field and in the classroom -- including Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston and Boston College running back Andre Williams, who won the Doak Walker Award.
The ACC on Monday announced its 67-member 2013 All-ACC Academic Football Team. To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. A student-athlete in graduate school must maintain a 3.5 grade point average. The ACC has selected an All-ACC Academic Football team every year since 1954.
Winston continued an ACC tradition, as each of the conference’s previous Heisman winners, Charlie Ward in 1993 and Chris Weinke in 2000, also were chosen to the All-ACC Academic football team. Duke, though, owned this team with 21 selections. Not bad for the Coastal Division champs.
All 14 ACC schools were represented by at least two selections on the team. The team was chosen from a pool of 122 players who were nominated by their schools. Here's the breakdown:
Maryland, NC State and Pitt: 6 each
Clemson and Virginia: 4 each
Boston College, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest: 3 each
Florida State, Miami, North Carolina and Syracuse: 2 each
