Virginia names defensive coordinator
By ESPN.com staff
Former Richmond coach Jim Reid has been named associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Virginia, the school recently announced. Reid spent the past two seasons as the outside linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins. First-year Virginia coach Mike London served as the recruiting coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Richmond during Reid's first two seasons as the Spiders' head coach (1995 to 1996).
London is obviously surrounding himself with people he knows and trusts, and that will make the coaching transition smooth, as everyone will be familiar with the philosophies and expectations. The fact that Reid has spent almost half of his career -- which spans about 36 years -- as a head coach will also be beneficial to London, who is still figuring out how to be a head coach. There is something to be said for staff continuity (ask Jim Grobe and Frank Beamer), and London is laying the foundation for that.
