ACC: Art Kaufman

UNC hires defensive line coach

September, 15, 2010
North Carolina has hired former Buffalo Bills assistant Charlie Coiner to coach the defensive line, coach Butch Davis said on Wednesday's ACC teleconference. Coiner takes over for John Blake, who resigned amidst an NCAA investigation into improper contact with agents.

“He’s got a diverse background,” Davis said. “He started his career early on the defensive side of the football. He’s going to work with our defensive ends and our defensive tackles. We’re still in the transition area of that.”

Davis said defensive coordinator Everett Withers and linebackers coach Art Kaufman will continue to help coach the defensive line until Coiner has gained enough exposure to the program and its personnel.

“One of the real added plusses is that he brings a level of expertise with some special teams," Davis said. "It’s unrealistic to expect in a short two-or-three day period of time that we’ll see the effects of what he’ll be able to do, but he’s a good football coach. He’s smart, he’s bright, he’s got good communication skills. He’s a good teacher. He’s got a unique perspective in that he has seen an awful lot of very good football players and I think it’s a good addition.”

Finally. These names have already surfaced here and there, but North Carolina coach Butch Davis had to wait until all of the paperwork was official before he could announce the hires of Troy Douglas, Art Kaufman and Allen Mogridge as his newest assistant coaches.

Mogridge, a former UNC letter winner (1996-99) will coach the tight ends, one of four positions he played in Chapel Hill. He most recently helped Buffalo to the 2008 Mid-American Conference championship.

"Chapel Hill is home for me and I'm thrilled to join this outstanding coaching staff," Mogridge said in a prepared statement. "I now have the unique opportunity to go recruit kids to the University I fell in love with as a high school senior and where I spent four wonderful years. Carolina is a special place with great people who value the combination of a great education and outstanding athletics."

Douglas, who spent the past three seasons as the defensive backs coach at South Florida, will coach the defensive backs with defensive coordinator Everett Withers. Douglas and Withers were teammates at Appalachian State in the 1980s.

Kaufman was most recently on the Southern Miss coaching staff, and the 25-year coaching veteran will coach the linebackers.

I spoke with Davis today about his goals and expectations for the spring, along with how he thought the new staff would impact the program this spring. Check back Wednesday, the first day of UNC spring football, for a Q&A with Davis.

UNC to hire Art Kaufman from Southern Miss

ESPN's Bruce Feldman is reporting that UNC will hire Southern Miss assistant Art Kaufman to coach the special teams or possibly the linebackers. Kaufman was the defensive line coach and special-teams coordinator for the Golden Eagles. He has 25 seasons of collegiate coaching experience.

Like UNC coach Butch Davis, Kaufman is also an Arkansas graduate. That leaves one position Davis still needs to fill. The Tar Heels are expected to hire South Florida secondary coach Troy Douglas.

As for the three players who were dismissed from the team -- deep-snapper Mark House, linebacker/defensive end Kenny Harris and receiver Anthony Parker-Boyd -- they weren't expected to be on the two-deep roster this spring. Only Parker-Boyd saw a live snap last season.
