ACC: Carl Gaskins

Opening camp: North Carolina

August, 6, 2010
8/06/10
10:00
AM ET
Schedule: Not for public release.

What’s new: The NCAA investigation has brought uncertainty to Chapel Hill, as it’s unclear whether or not the findings will have any repercussions for players. If the investigation does not end by the time the season opener against LSU rolls around, coach Butch Davis will have to make a decision as to whether or not to play athletes who could later be ruled ineligible.

Sidelined: Despite the current investigation, a school spokesman said everyone on the two-deep roster is expected to practice today.

Key battle: Left tackle. Junior Carl Gaskins and freshman James Hurst are both trying to replace three-year starter Kyle Jolly. Hurst enrolled in January and impressed the coaches this spring. He is a member of the ESPNU 150. Gaskins was competing for the right tackle spot last year but suffered a season-ending torn ACL during the preseason. He was limited in the spring, but is healthy and ready for fall camp.

New on the scene: Jonathan Cooper at center. Last year he played guard, but is expected now to anchor a line in need of improvement. He moved to center this past spring and last year had a team-best 40 knockdown blocks despite missing three games with an ankle injury.

Breaking out: Middle linebacker Kevin Reddick. Quan Sturdivant and Bruce Carter get all of the attention, but Reddick is just as good and has the potential to be better. He’s fast, physical and became a starter as a true freshman last year when he started the last seven games. He finished the regular season with 45 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and one pass breakup.

Don’t forget about: Defensive end Tydreke Powell. He will replace Cam Thomas and could be the next top draft pick for the Tar Heels. He’s the player who stripped the ball from Ryan Williams in the surprising road win over Virginia Tech. He’s a powerful player and was in the regular rotation last year.

All eyes on: Quarterback T.J. Yates. He had 15 interceptions last year and will be pushed this summer by backup Bryn Renner. Davis said he doesn’t need to see Renner in a game situation to make a change in the starting lineup, but it’s Yates’ job to lose.

Quotable: “The only instruction we gave the players was ‘tell the truth.’” -- Davis on the NCAA investigation.

More teams opening camp.

Spring answers

1. Offensive line potential. There were signs this spring that UNC fans can expect the offensive line to be better -– as long as everyone stays healthy. Center Jonathan Cooper started nine games as a freshman last year, guard Alan Pelc will be a three-year starter, Carl Gaskins has drawn rave reviews the past two years, and Travis Bond played well in his start against Pitt’s physical defensive line in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

2. Little leader. After the success he had last season cementing his position as the team’s top receiver, Greg Little took more ownership of an offense that needs it. His success carried over to spring drills, and it’s clear he’ll be the leader of a group that returns its top 13 receivers from a year ago.

3. Draughn back on top. He was injured in the ninth game and missed the rest of the season, but reasserted himself as the main man this spring with Houston out to concentrate on his academics. (Houston wasn’t suspended, he just needed some extra time to focus). Draughn appears to be the likely starter heading into the fall.

Fall questions

1. The Yates debate. It’s one of the biggest questions in the conference this season: Will rookie Bryn Renner unseat Yates as the starter? Coach Butch Davis has said that Renner will play against LSU, but how much and when is anybody’s guess. Odds are it would take a remarkable performance by Renner in summer camp or an injury to Yates for him to lose his job before the season opener.

2. Overall offensive improvement. How much better can the offense be? It has to be better than 108th in the country in total offense. The Tar Heels have got to run the ball better, no matter who the quarterback is. There are no longer three freshmen on the offensive line, and if everyone stays healthy, that leaves no more excuses.

3. Defensive line tweaks. Even one of the most talented defenses in the country has a few holes to fill, and it’s up front for the Tar Heels, were defensive end E.J. Wilson and tackle Cam Thomas have to be replaced. Tydreke Powell is the frontrunner to take over at tackle and Quinton Coples and Michael McAdoo will continue to compete this summer. McAdoo had four sacks and an interception in the spring game, a performance that kept him in the conversation.

The weekly injury reports have all come in (some come in much later than others, which is why I wait until Friday mornings to do this). If you don't see 'em, they weren't sent. Maryland will miss Bruce Campbell again, Duke has a handful of key players who could miss the game at Kansas, including Vince Oghobaasse, Virginia is likely to be without Vic Hall, and Boston College will be without defensive tackle Damik Scafe. Not good news for any of those teams. It looks like UNC might -- might -- get Jonathan Cooper back on the offensive line. That would be a huge help.

UNC coach Butch Davis addresses injuries

North Carolina isn't going to make any dramatic adjustments to its offense this week against East Carolina, coach Butch Davis said, despite the numerous injuries to key starters, including tight end Zack Pianalto and center Lowell Dyer. Both are expected to miss three to four weeks, and considering how thin the Heels' offensive line was to begin with, this situation obviously doesn't help.

Still, Davis said it would be worse to try to "recreate the wheel in three day's practice."

"We're just going to try to plug some guys in and continue with the identity," he said. "I think it would be somewhat detrimental to our entire offensive football team to totally deviate, go in a totally different direction just because some guys got injured."

Davis said he liked what he saw from Cam Holland against Connecticut, but he expects Holland to improve with increased experience.

Davis said he’s never coached a position that needed so much shuffling this early in the season. In August, offensive tackle Carl Gaskins tore his ACL, Aaron Stahl decided to graduate and leave the program early, foregoing a final year of eligibility. And reserve Kevin Bryant, who was charged with misdemeanor assault of a female this summer, decided not to return to the program for his sophomore season.

“We’ve lost a significant amount of offensive linemen over the last seven or eight months,” Davis said. “… A young offensive line got even younger. … Our coaches have done a good job of trying to settle that group down. Those kids are focusing on trying to practice and get better with their fundamentals and hopefully it will start to pay dividends.

“One of the things you’d like to have at some point in time is consistency and continuity on the offensive line,” Davis said. “It was as setback certainly to lose a fifth year senior starting center in Lowell Dyer. Cam Holland came in and did a very good job for his first opportunity to get a chance to start a ball game. We’re very, very young in the offensive line. As guys get more game experience and more playing experience, our expectations are they will continue to improve. But I think our kids did a good job and our coaching staff did an outstanding job of not panicking, showing some maturity and showing some poise when things were going tough last week.”

UNC's O-line trying to lay low, prove themselves quietly

Offensive linemen just can't win.

If they're good and doing their jobs well, you don't hear much about them. Instead, you hear about the talented athletes they're blocking for. If they're struggling, though, they're tagged as the root of the problem, just like Clemson's offensive line was a year ago.

After a turbulent offseason that included a few departures and injuries, North Carolina's front five are working hard to make it through this fall rather unnoticed.

"That's the motivation to be good," junior offensive guard Alan Pelc said. "There's not a lot of talk about the offensive line, but that's what we got into. We came into it knowing that, and to us it's a good thing if our name's not mentioned."

So far, UNC's O-line has been the topic of discussion for all the wrong reasons. Earlier this month, offensive tackle Carl Gaskins tore his ACL, which ended his season. Aaron Stahl decided to graduate and leave the program, foregoing a final year of eligibility. And reserve Kevin Bryant, who was charged with misdemeanor assault of a female this summer, decided not to return to the program for his sophomore season. All that while the Heels were trying to replace two starters to graduation.

"We're going to be fine," center Lowell Dyer said. "I think what a lot of people are concerned about is that there's not necessarily a lot of experience, as far as game time, but the talent is there, the technique, the knowledge. We've got people coming along. I don't think it's what everybody is making it out to be. It's certainly not something I'm losing sleep over."

The Heels have seven older players they can depend upon, and three true freshmen on scholarship who help make up the two-deep rotation. Pelc, Dyer and Kyle Jolly are the veterans of the group. Junior Mike Ingersoll, who has played at guard, center and tackle, can obviously help anywhere, but his playing time has been limited. One of the younger players worth keeping an eye on will be Jonathan Cooper, a redshirt freshman who offensive line coach Sam Pittman said is "a very fine player." Junior Greg Elleby is a reserve at left guard and left tackle, and Cam Holland is his entering his third season as a center. (He can also bench a team-best 500 pounds.)

So it's not as if there's not skill on the roster, it's just that a lack of experience leaves room for doubt -- especially when you're looking from the outside in.

"They're the cards that are dealt to us right now," Pittman said. "We're going to go out and do the very best we can. … We have seven guys that have won ball games, and so we just have to bring the young guys along. You're concerned about the injuries, but other than that, we're a pretty good offensive line out there."

All they have to do now is prove it.
