Spring answers
1. Renner fits spread: New North Carolina coach Larry Fedora’s spread offense might not be the perfect fit for quarterback Renner. But Renner ran a spread offense while playing high school football for his father and has adjusted well. Renner set a UNC single-season record with 26 touchdown passes last season while working in a pro-style offense. He completed 23 of 28 passes for 295 yards with two touchdowns in the spring game.
2. Hurry up: Fedora and his staff spent most of the spring teaching their new players how to run a hurry-up offense. The Tar Heels huddled under former coach Butch Davis. Fedora wants the Tar Heels to run about 80 plays per game, meaning they’ll have to be lined up for the next play as soon as an official spots the ball. It will be a big adjustment for the offense, especially for the linemen, but they adapted pretty well in the spring.
3. Barth is back: Senior kicker Casey Barth is a big weapon for the Tar Heels and showed good leg strength after missing most of last season with a groin injury. He was granted a fifth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Barth, who made 41 of 48 field goal attempts over the past three seasons, kicked two field goals in the spring game.
Fall questions
1. Defensive overhaul: The UNC offense isn’t the only thing undergoing a makeover in Chapel Hill. Co-defensive coordinators Dan Disch and Vic Koenning are installing a 4-2-5 scheme, which employs two hybrid positions (bandit and ram). The defense will allow the Tar Heels to have five defensive backs on the field most of the time, which should help them against pass-happy offenses.
2. Wide receiver depth: UNC lost leading receiver Dwight Jones and had only five scholarship receivers during spring practice. Fedora likes to have about 10-12 receivers at his disposal to run in and out of games. There’s some help coming in the incoming freshman class, but the Tar Heels will have to develop some receivers quickly. Senior Erik Highsmith and sophomore T.J. Thorpe are both big playmakers and seniors Jheranie Boyd and Todd Harrelson showed signs of being able to help during the spring.
3. Motivation: The Tar Heels are ineligible to play in a bowl game this coming season because of probation for violations committed during Davis’ tenure. How will Fedora and his staff keep the players motivated this fall? The Tar Heels are saying all the right things, but how will they react when they face adversity this coming season? This team has been through so much the past two seasons, they’ll have plenty of experience in dealing with problems.

The ACC has granted North Carolina place-kicker Casey Barth a medical hardship waiver for the 2011 season, allowing him a fifth year of eligibility in 2012.
Barth played in just three games in 2011 due to an injured groin. He strained his groin in the first half against Virginia on Sept. 17 and did not kick the rest of the year.
Barth made all 11 extra points and one field goal -- a 46-yarder against Rutgers -- in the first two and a half games before the injury. He has made 51 of 63 career field goal attempts and a school-record 82 consecutive extra points. He needs just four field goals to surpass his brother Connor’s school-record total of 54.

North Carolina kicker Casey Barth, who has been limited to three games due to an injured groin, will not return this year and will seek a medical hardship waiver from the ACC, the school announced on Thursday. The waiver would allow Barth to play a fifth year in 2012. Barth strained his groin in the first half against Virginia on Sept. 17 and has not kicked since.
From the release:
From the release:
A native of Wilmington, N.C., Barth made all 11 extra points and one field goal – a 46-yarder vs. Rutgers – in the first two and a half games this season before the injury. He has made 51 of 63 career field goal attempts and a school-record 82 consecutive extra points. He needs just four field goals to surpass his brother Connor’s school-record total of 54.
In 2010, Barth earned honorable mention All-ACC honors after converting 19 of 22 field goal attempts, including a long of 49. He made all 38 extra point attempts. Barth entered the 2011 season sixth among active players in the NCAA.

Here’s your weekly dose of ACC notes to make you feel smarter, thanks to the sports information directors throughout the league. If you’re going to the Duke-Stanford game, you might want to take a few classes first to feel included.
ACC: There were 14 touchdowns scored by ACC true or redshirt freshmen in the opening games of their careers this past weekend. A total of eight touchdowns were by true freshmen, including Virginia running back Kevin Parks (3) and receiver Clifton Richardson; Clemson receiver Sammy Watkins and runing back Mike Bellamy and Florida State running back Devonta Freeman and receiver Rashad Greene.
BOSTON COLLEGE: Whether or not running back Montel Harris returns from a knee injury against Central Florida remains to be seen, but here’s one stat you might not know about him: Harris has lost just six fumbles in 832 career touches.
CLEMSON: It only took 26 seconds for Clemson true freshman receiver Sammy Watkins to score a touchdown in his collegiate career. Watkins caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tajh Boyd at the 14:34 mark of the first quarter in the Tigers 43-19 win over Troy -- the quickest ever for a Clemson player.
DUKE: Duke has lost 42 straight games against ranked opponents, last beating No. 13 Virginia in 1994. The Blue Devils last beat a top-10 team in 1989, when Steve Spurrier’s Duke squad knocked off No. 7 Clemson. Since then, they’ve lost 20 straight against top-10 opponents.
FLORIDA STATE: Florida State is 14-0 all-time against FCS opponents since the NCAA split Division I in 1978. Charleston Southern is 0-21 all-time against current FBS teams. The two teams have never met before.
GEORGIA TECH: Quarterback Tevin Washington and receiver Stephen Hill have combined for three of the 24 longest pass plays in Yellow Jacket history, and two of those long plays (82 and 77 yards) came in the season opener against Western Carolina. Georgia Tech currently ranks in the top 10 nationally in all four major offensive categories: third in total offense, fourth in scoring offense, seventh in passing offense and eighth in rushing offense.
MARYLAND: Maryland's no-huddle, hurry-up offense produced the biggest offensive output in almost six years against Miami. The Terps racked up 499 yards of total offense, the most since putting up 524 against North Carolina on Nov. 12, 2005. Quarterback Danny O'Brien accounted for 385 of those yards (348 passing, 37 rushing).
MIAMI: Two years ago, Al Golden’s Temple team began the season with losses to Villanova and Penn State before winning nine consecutive games en route to a bowl appearance.
NORTH CAROLINA: Place-kicker Casey Barth needs just five field goals to surpass his brother Connor’s school-record total of 54. Casey Barth has made 50 of 62 career field goal attempts and a school-record 77 straight extra points.
NC STATE: NC State was one of two FBS teams -- Colorado was the other -- to start freshmen at punter and placekicker last week.
VIRGINIA: The Cavaliers got all four of their touchdowns from freshmen in a 40-3 win over William & Mary last weekend. Running back Kevin Parks became the first Cavalier to rush for three scores in his debut since Bob Davis in 1964. (Davis was a sophomore; freshmen were ineligible by NCAA rule at the time.)
VIRGINIA TECH: Logan Thomas and Mark Leal became the first quarterbacks in school history to both throw two touchdown passes in the same game. Thomas had touchdown passes of 7 and 4 yards against Appalachian State, while Leal connected on scoring passes of 22 and 63 yards against the Mountaineers.
WAKE FOREST: Quarterback Tanner Price, who is expected to start against NC State after spraining his left knee last week against Syracuse, will enter the NC State game having thrown 99 consecutive passes without an interception. His last pick came against Boston College on Nov. 6, 2010.
ACC: There were 14 touchdowns scored by ACC true or redshirt freshmen in the opening games of their careers this past weekend. Sorry guys, I'm at BC doing interviews, so short n' sweet on the links today ...
- Virginia Tech's secondary has gone through a switch, with Antone Exum and Eddie Whitley switching positions.
- North Carolina kicker Casey Barth had become more comfortable kicking from distances over 50 yards.
- Clemson's young secondary could be one area opponents could expose.
- There have been mixed reviews on Maryland's new unis.
- In order for Georgia Tech's defense to be better, the linebackers will have to be better, regardless of what system they were recruited to play in.
- Mike Glennon isn't the only quarterback facing questions at NC State.
- Miami will have more starters helping out on special teams this year.
- Andrew Miller has brought some toughness to Virginia Tech's offensive line.
The members of the National College Football Awards Association unveiled their preseason watch lists over a 13-day period concluding with the Walter Camp Award's list today. Fifteen of the association's 21 awards selected a preseason watch list, and I've compiled your ACC candidates here:
