Spring Road in Blacksburg, Virginia, on the Virginia Tech campus has a new name: Beamer Way.
The school's board of visitors renamed the street — which runs along the west grandstands and press box of Lane Stadium — in honor of 29th-year Hokies head coach Frank Beamer and his wife Cheryl for their contributions to Virginia Tech.
The official athletic department street address will be known as 25 Beamer Way, recognizing Beamer's jersey number from his playing days with the Hokies from 1966-68.
"I am tremendously honored and humbled," Beamer said in a news release. "When I was informed of this, I had two immediate thoughts. First, the appreciation I have for all of the players, coaches, support staff and fans that laid the foundation for this program. And secondly, I hope the ‘Beamer Way’ is the right way! When people see that sign, I hope they can be proud of what it represents. To any and all who had a part in this humbling recognition, I sincerely thank you."
Visiting Ohio State players and fans will be among the first to get a glimpse of the new signage, as Virginia Tech plans to have it before the Hokies' Sept. 7 opener against the defending national champion Buckeyes.
