Wolfpack dealt 'bad hand' ... again
NC State coach Tom O’Brien has had it with the injuries.
“We thought it was bad last year,” O’Brien said. “It's three times as bad this year as it was last year. It's got to end sometime before I die here. I don't know, one or the other. I hope I'm the next one hurt the way we're going. I'll take a hit for the team if it'll keep somebody else healthy.”
He’s about the only one on the Pack’s roster who hasn’t taken a hit this year.
For the third straight season, NC State (3-5, 0-4 ACC) can point to injuries as a legitimate excuse for a lack of production on the field. No coach will ever call it an “excuse,” but it’s impossible to deny it’s been a factor, just like it was at North Carolina earlier this season.
The latest player to be added to the list of season-ending injuries was wide receiver T.J. Graham, who was added to Thursday's injury report with a stress fracture in his leg. That knews came on the heels of a season-ending injury to freshman offensive guard R.J Mattes, who had started all eight games before he suffered a torn ACL and MCL just five plays into the Florida State game. Andy Barbee will start in his place at guard in Saturday’s game against Maryland.
“Yeah, he was our best first-year guy, a guy we were really excited about,” O’Brien said of Mattes. “He's a natural tackle which is where he'll go back next year, but he helped at guard and he stepped in there, accepted the challenge and kept getting better and better every game. That's another one of those tough losses for us.”
Another one? How about another dozen?
Over O’Brien’s first three seasons, a total of 38 starters have missed a total of 151 games:
- In 2007, 13 starters missed 44 total games.
- During the 2008 regular season, 13 starters missed a total of 75 games.
- This season, 12 (current, projected or past) starters have missed a total of 32 games due to injuries. That number will go up after this weekend without Mattes and Graham.
The defense has been hit the hardest, with six starters missing a total of 23 games and three now out for the season. Most notable is linebacker Nate Irving, who has missed the entire season with injuries he suffered in a horrific automobile accident this summer.
Jeff Rieskamp, who started two games at defensive end a year ago and was expected to battle for a spot this season, has missed every game this year. Ray Michel, who had started 21 straight games at middle linebacker, missed last week’s game with an ankle injury. Cornerback Rashard Smith, a rookie who had moved into the starting lineup, is out of the season with a knee injury. The other starting corner, DeAndre Morgan, missed the first two games of 2009, while safety Clem Johnson also missed a game.
Those numbers don’t even include safety Javon Walker, who sat out last season with a knee injury and has also missed the entire season.
“You can't work around it,” O’Brien said. “You have to understand what's going on. The kids are fine. I think they are excited about the opportunity to come back home and play a football game. That's who you worry about the most. I think they've kind of accepted the fact they've been dealt a bad hand. There's nothing they can do but fight their way out of it, so we are going to continue to fight and play hard and be the best team we can.”
NC State defensive coordinator Mike Archer hasn’t exactly been sleeping too well these days, and he knows he’s not winning the People’s Choice award right now in Raleigh. But he’s working tirelessly nonetheless to improve NC State’s defense. He’s certain the problem isn’t effort. Long story short, it’s a combination of injuries, inexperience and, at this point, a lack of confidence.
NC State’s defense has given up an average of 482 yards of total defense in its four ACC games, the worst mark in the league by almost 30 yards. In conference games, the Wolfpack ranks last in the league in total defense, scoring defense, passing defense and ranks 11th in rushing defense. The only position on defense that has started the same unit in every game is the defensive line.

Here are the highlights of our recent conversation:
Man, another tough year for the D.
Mike Archer: It is what it is. You and I talked this summer, we got off to a rough start with what happened to Nate [Irving]. And then Dominique [Ellis] left the team and Jimmaul Simmons left the team, and Javon Walker, who started five games for us in 2007, and got injured in the Miami game, we were very hopeful he would be back for this year. We were counting on him being one of the safeties and he’s done with football.
You take those four guys, and three of them played on one side of the field, it’s been tough. But it’s part of the game. No one feels sorry for us. Everybody has injuries. It’s been frustrating and it’s been hard. The way we started, the South Carolina game, we played very well and held them to seven points, but realistically they weren’t quite sure of what we were going to do. We played with a true freshman corner and a redshirt freshman corner in that game, and we played a lot of Cover 2. But as the year goes on and that film goes out, people find them. When we were in Tallahassee, I look out there Saturday and we have a true freshman corner, a true freshman safety, a redshirt freshman safety and a junior corner on the field with two freshman linebackers.
It is what it is. You’re not going to be just stoning people when you’re playing young kids. We have to understand that and continue to move forward and keep improving. That’s our job as players and as coaches.
I remember last year when the defense was struggling, you challenged them. Remember that? It was a pretty public thing. Have you guys had a talk like that, or is this not the case for it?
MA: I’ve thought about that and we’ve talked. During the open date after the BC game, we sat down and looked everything we’ve done and it really comes down to execution. We’ve got a good system in place when our guys execute it. When we have the right guys out there, we’re pretty good. We have to execute. That’s what’s been frustrating.
It started in the second half of the Wake Forest game. We were not very good on third downs against Riley Skinner and it ended up costing us the game. The following week at Duke, third downs just killed us. They were 13-of-19 and could not get off the field on third down and picked us apart. Those two quarterbacks are awfully good. They were smart. They went after our freshman corners and our freshman safety. That’s their job as coaches. They get paid, too. They’re on scholarship. But third down has not been what it was early in the season. We were good in the South Carolina game, we were pretty good in the third down against Pitt. But we’ve lost our execution edge and the biggest thing in my opinion, we’ve lost confidence, obviously. It’s become mental.
On the bright side, I would think Willie Young has been one of the guys who has played consistently.
MA: Our front four kids, the four seniors, Alan- Michael Cash, Willie, Shea McKeen and Leroy Burgess have really done a good job all year. All year. When you look at us on defense, there are four seniors and everyone else is freshmen and sophomores. There’s a big age gap there. They’ve done a good job of being positive leaders and keeping everyone’s chins up. Nobody feels sorry for us and we don’t want anybody to feel sorry for us. It is what it is. It’s part of sports. It’s like [head coach] Tom O'Brien] said, we’ve lost 11 guys this year for the year. We thought we had it bad last year. It’s worse this year.
Why? Why does that happen to you guys?
MA: If I knew, I wouldn’t be coaching. I’d be a doctor or a sports psychologist. I’d have your job. ... Everyone says it’s a curse. It’s the way it is. I wish I knew so we could prevent it, but like Todd Rice says, if we knew, we’d prevent it.
I think I actually have them all this week ...

Will defenses show up in Tallahassee?
NC State coach Tom O’Brien isn’t naïve -- he knows his pass defense looks like an easy target right now, especially to a Florida State quarterback who is leading the ACC in passing average per game.
“You look at our secondary and as decimated that we are and the young kids we’re playing,” O’Brien said, “I think [Christian] Ponder's probably down there salivating about the opportunity to throw against us.”
The same thing can probably be said, though, for NC State quarterback Russell Wilson -- and he might actually have an easier night than Ponder.
Statistically, Florida State’s defense is worse than the Wolfpack’s. When Florida State hosts NC State on Saturday, it will be a matchup between two pass-happy offenses and two of the league’s most inviting defenses. The two things the Seminoles have in this game that NC State does not are home field advantage and momentum from last Thursday night’s win over North Carolina. So far, though, home field advantage has amounted to little more than a September win over Jacksonville State. The stakes will be much higher this weekend, though, as FSU is still playing for bowl eligibility and the slim chance of sneaking into the ACC championship game.
Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said he keeps waiting for his defense to “break out.”
“There’s no doubt the key is going to be, is our defense going to get better?” Bowden said. “Stopping people right now has been our biggest problem. … I’ve never liked to approach a season where the only way we’re going to win is by outscoring people. I’ve always felt like you win with defense, you win with kicking, and don’t give it away on offense. This year it’s been more of a shootout year.”
That trend looks to continue this weekend.
“Now if one of the defenses decides to rise up and play the best they can without errors, that could change the whole deal,” Bowden said. “But looking at it on paper, it looks like a shootout.”
Ponder is ranked ninth nationally in passing efficiency and leads the ACC with 310.9 yards per game, but most of his standout performances have been nullified by the defense’s inability to make a stop, lending to the Seminoles’ 3-4 record. FSU is ranked last in the ACC in total defense, last in rushing defense, and last in pass defense efficiency. Wilson, last year’s first-team ACC quarterback, has faced similar struggles, as NC State’s defense is No. 10 in the conference in pass defense efficiency and is allowing 215.4 passing yards per game. Duke quarterback Thaddeus Lewis looked like an all-star against the Pack with almost 500 passing yards and five touchdowns, and BC running back Montel Harris got the nation’s attention when he ran for 264 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-20 romp of the Pack on Oct. 17.
It hasn’t helped that NC State has lost a total of 10 players with season-ending injuries this year, and half have been from the defense, including freshman cornerback Rashard Smith and safety Javon Walker. O’Brien said the Pack will be starting its seventh different secondary in eight games, and that they spent the bye week working to limit the big plays and yards after catch.
“You look at the way they’re playing on offense and it seems to indicate we’re going to have to score some points to be in the football game,” O’Brien said. “We’re going to have to work hard to put pressure on (Ponder), and try to disrupt some things and limit the big plays they have, and the scores, but if it comes down to that, then we have to outscore them if we’re going to win the football game.”
Sounds like a shootout.

The weekly injury reports have all come in (some come in much later than others, which is why I wait until Friday mornings to do this). If you don't see 'em, they weren't sent. Maryland will miss Bruce Campbell again, Duke has a handful of key players who could miss the game at Kansas, including Vince Oghobaasse, Virginia is likely to be without Vic Hall, and Boston College will be without defensive tackle Damik Scafe. Not good news for any of those teams. It looks like UNC might -- might -- get Jonathan Cooper back on the offensive line. That would be a huge help.

NC State's secondary has 'something to prove'
Posted by ESPN.com’s Heather Dinich
It’s not that NC State coach Tom O’Brien is concerned about his secondary, he just doesn’t quite know what to expect.
He’s not the only one.
The starting lineup for tonight’s game against South Carolina is comprised of redshirt freshman C.J. Wilson at field corner, redshirt sophomore free safety Justin Byers, senior safety Clem Johnson and redshirt senior Koyal George. They have combined for 14 starts, one former walk-on receiver and one formerly broken jaw. While much attention has been paid -- and deservedly so -- to the huge void left at linebacker by the loss of Nate Irving, the Pack’s unproven secondary might be the bigger question for NC State’s defense.
They’ll be without injured cornerback DeAndre Morgan, who is the most experienced of the group, but lost the job to Wilson this summer and has an ankle injury. Also missing from the group is strong safety Javon Walker, who tore his ACL in 2007 and missed 2008 as he continued to rehab from reconstructive knee surgery. And sophomore cornerback Dominique Ellis, who played mainly on special teams, decided to transfer in July.
“I think our depth is OK,” O’Brien said. “The inexperience is what we’re going to have to play with. C.J. Wilson earned the right to start in the game. He would’ve started whether Morgan was healthy or not. Rashard Smith is a freshman that’s come in and he’ll be our starting nickelback. He’s earned that position. He’s very capable, but along with those freshmen you just don’t know what’s going to happen Thursday night. If they continue to play like they practiced and continue to play like they did in scrimmage situations, I think they’ll be fine.”
The players are well aware of the questions outsiders have about them. Johnson said even he considered the defensive line to be the strength of the defense right now.
“We definitely do have something to prove, just for the simple fact that everyone expects us to be the weakest link of the defense,” he said. “We’re going to go out there and try to focus on what we’re supposed to be doing, executing and making plays.”
Johnson, a senior who played in just eight games last year after transferring from Valley Forge Military College and suffering a broken jaw in the preseason, is suddenly the veteran of the group. He showed the potential to be an impact player when he was healthy with two pass breakups and two interceptions. He returned from his broken jaw against Boston College on Oct. 4, and was playing well before he injured his ankle in the first half against North Carolina.
George, formerly a walk-on wide receiver, moved to the secondary and earned a scholarship last spring. He earned the starting job at corner last year against Florida State and Miami, but played just one snap against the Hurricanes.
“Me and Koyal are both on the boundary side, and right now I have no worries about him playing well on Thursday,” Johnson said. “He just has the natural ability of a corner. I think he has an edge on understanding routes. I feel really comfortable with him as the boundary corner on my side.”
Wilson said he thinks they’ll match up well against sophomore quarterback Stephen Garcia, who has been inconsistent during his career so far but is the only quarterback on the Gamecocks’ roster with any experience. He started three games last year and was 1-2 with a win over Tennessee.
“We’re very talented back here,” Wilson said. “We might not be as experienced as them, but we have good enough athletes and our coaches know the game real well. Listening to them and their coaching points, we should be fine come Thursday.”

As summer camps get underway, there are almost always a few players missing, whether it's for academic reasons, suspensions, injuries, etc. I checked in with each school's sports information department for an attendance check on who will be missing this summer at each school. Overall, almost everyone seems to be in good shape, but there will be some key players out you already knew about. NC State appears to be missing the most as far as guys who have or would have been key contributors.
Here are the results:
BOSTON COLLEGE: Linebacker Mark Herzlich is out, along with linebacker Mike McLaughlin and fullback James McCluskey, both with Achilles.
CLEMSON: All present.
DUKE: Defensive tackle Kinney Rucker -- out due to injury.
FLORIDA STATE: Offensive lineman Aubrey Phillips transferred (rather loudly) to Auburn, outside linebacker C.J. Mizell won't be around and Willie Downs is headed to junior college. I'm told grades get posted next week, so this list could change.
GEORGIA TECH: Sophomore linebacker Kyle Jackson (foot injury)
MARYLAND: Two signees are heading to prep school: Lorne Goree and David Mackall.
MIAMI: All present.
NORTH CAROLINA: Prep school: Justin Dixon, D.J. Bunn, Johnnie Farms, J.R. Rhodes. Junior college: Ray-Ray Davis. Released from letter of intent: Angelo Hadley (arrested), Prizell Brown (junior college transfer, academics). Pending: Donavan Tate.
NC STATE: Jimmaul Simmons has left the team and school. Injured players who reported but will not compete in fall camp: Donald Bowens, Ryan Cheek, Nate Irving, Colby Jackson, Javon Walker.
VIRGINIA: Kevin Crawford (NT) and Rod Wheeler (TE) are no longer enrolled. OT Morgan Moses will enroll in prep school this fall.
VIRGINIA TECH: Kenny Lewis, Jr. is the only one who's still slowed by injury (Achilles) and will miss at least the first part of camp, if not more.
WAKE FOREST: All present.
