ACC: Kyle Jackson
"I just talked to the trainer, and right now, like I said, we've still got some guys beat up and banged up a little bit, but I think we're going to have most of them available for the game," Johnson said on Sunday night. "They might miss a day of practice or so, just like anytime you play a physical game. But I think Stephen (Hill) is going to be okay. I think he's got a mild bruise really is what it is. I think he'll be okay.
"The one guy who might be a little more serious injury is Ben Anderson. I think he's a guy that might be doubtful. I think the rest of the guys will be fine."

Georgia Tech's D in need of quick improvement
Posted by ESPN.com’s Heather Dinich
Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Dave Wommack has tried just about everything. He’s moved players around. He’s switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme because he was running out of healthy defensive ends. Now, with the injury situation having limited his options, he’s given his players one more task -- have fun.

| Safety Morgan Burnett knows the defense needs to pick things up. |
Georgia Tech safety Morgan Burnett said the message this week was not to become preoccupied with making mistakes or worrying about past errors made against Florida State. Instead, it was to let loose and have some fun on Saturday against the Hokies.
There’s no question, though, that the Yellow Jackets’ pride has taken a hit in the past two weeks. Despite winning both games, Georgia Tech allowed Florida State 539 yards of total offense and Mississippi State racked up 487. Both teams averaged 37.5 points against Georgia Tech, and with the way Virginia Tech’s offense has been clicking lately, the better defense should win on Saturday in what could be a season-defining Coastal Division game.
“You take that real personal because football is a competitive sport, so no matter what you do, you want to be the best,” Burnett said. “You want to be the best unit and you want to try to stop the offense. When a team puts up that many points, it’s very frustrating, and it gets you really upset. But you can’t get frustrated. We have to move on to Virginia Tech. We can’t sit back and worry about what happened at Florida State. The only thing we can do is fix it and get better.”
Georgia Tech’s defense was the Jackets’ lone question mark entering this year, as it lost three of four starting defensive linemen who are now in the NFL. With the exception of Burnett and defensive end Derrick Morgan, this defense lacks the superstar lineup it had a year ago, and injuries have compounded the problem.
Linebacker Kyle Jackson suffered a season-ending foot injury, and two defensive ends -- Anthony Egbuniwe and Robert Hall -- have both missed time. Hall could return from a knee injury in November, and Egbuniwe missed one game with an illness. Two star safeties -- Cooper Taylor and Dominique Reese -- have missed a combined four games. Taylor has missed the past three games with a heart problem, but began to practice lightly on Monday. Reese has a shoulder injury and missed one full game and played only a snap at MSU. Combined, those players have missed 13 games.
“You hate to sit there and say that because it sounds like you’re making excuses,” Wommack said, “but I think that’s it as much as anything, I really do.”
It’s caused a lack of continuity, and the Jackets have gotten away from the experienced reps they had during spring and two-a-days. Wommack said he doesn’t expect to get anyone healthy this week. Instead, he’s had to move a corner who’s never played safety to free safety in Rashaad Reid, and that’s part of the reason he’s been tweaking his defensive philosophy midseason, which is usually unheard of.
“It’s the worst thing you can do, to keep changing this and that,” Wommack said. “We’ve got new players playing different positions and so forth, but it’s somewhat been out of necessity, too.”
Georgia Tech is ranked 108th in the nation in pass efficiency defense. Its rushing defense is allowing 135.5 yards per game. The number that counts, though, is how many points they’re allowing, and that’s 26.5 points per game. None of those statistics match up well against the No. 4 ranked Hokies, who are scoring 34 points per game, and rushing for 208.5 yards per game. Virginia Tech is ranked among the top 20 in the country in both categories.
“You just fight through it, that’s what you’ve gotta do,” Wommack said. “You try to point out the mistakes to the kids when you review the film and why, where the breakdowns were, and all of a sudden you start getting better. It doesn’t happen overnight. It really doesn’t happen overnight.”
It’s got to happen by Saturday, though, or the Jackets will be behind the Hokies in the Coastal Division standings -- again.

- As if Duke didn't have enough obstacles to overcome on Saturday against Virginia Tech, the Blue Devils will enter that game with their top three running backs hurting.
- Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe has a reputation for redshirting freshmen, but he's willing to give three of them a closer look this week.
- When Virginia walk-on receiver Ray Keys played against Southern Miss, he and his father became the first black father-son duo to play for the Cavaliers.
- Virginia Tech's Matt Reidy has reached instant celeb status in Blacksburg. A 1-yard punt return for a touchdown will do that for a guy.
- Georgia Tech linebacker Kyle Jackson will have surgery today and is out for the season. Big loss for the Jackets and Jackson. He's a good player and a great person. I got a chance to chat with him a bit this summer.
- Meet UNC's version of "Hercules," defensive end Robert Quinn. Everyone -- but Quinn -- raves about him.
- You know that unofficial "state championship" going on in North Carolina? Well, Tom O'Brien is winning the recruiting one, too.
- Will Clemson repeat the old Tommy Bowden mantra "one play away" under Dabo Swinney? He said if it does, find somebody else in three years.
- Maryland quarterback Chris Turner is getting a little skittish, and offensive coordinator James Franklin can't exactly blame him. Who could? Turner has been sacked 14 times. It's amazing he can still walk.
- One person who wasn't surprised by Florida State's struggles up front with South Florida was offensive line coach Rick Trickett.

No news is good news for Clemson

There's not one name on Clemson's injury report for Thursday night's game, and as of Tuesday evening, everyone was ready to play -- including C.J. Spiller, who left the Middle Tennessee game early with hamstring and foot injuries. The Tigers will need him to go four quarters on Thursday against Georgia Tech.
Better yet, they'll need him to play like he did in 2006, when both teams were ranked among the top 15 and Clemson's offense was, well, stunning. The Tigers racked up 321 yards on just 38 carries against a Georgia Tech team that entered the game seventh in the nation against the run.
Spiller had 116 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown that day. He also had a 50-yard touchdown run and a 50-yard touchdown catch. On third-and-four in the fourth quarter, Spiller took a swing pass on the right side, escaped two defenders and sprinted 50 yards for a touchdown. Coach Dabo Swinney still remembers it, as Spiller became the first Tiger to have a 50-yard touchdown run and a 50-yard touchdown catch in the same game.
"That was a great play," Swinney said. "We just had a simple curl play called. I still don't know why we threw to him because it was Cover 2 and they had a corner that had him and it should have been a tackle for no gain or a 2-yard gain. He just does what he does. He beat the corner and then made another guy miss and then just ran away from everybody. He is an explosive layer. I was happy to see him start the season the way he did Saturday. It is hard to start off your senior year any better with your very first touch of the season going 96 yards."
Of course, Georgia Tech will answer with Jonathan Dwyer, but it will be a great battle of the backs on Thursday night if Spiller can stay on the field.
Here is Georgia Tech's injury report:
Out
- Jaybo Shaw, So., QB (broken collarbone)
- Kyle Jackson, r-So., LB (foot)
- Tyler Melton, So., WR (knee)
- Preston Lyons, Jr., BB (shoulder)
- None
- Richard Watson, r-Fr., BB (hamstring)

As summer camps get underway, there are almost always a few players missing, whether it's for academic reasons, suspensions, injuries, etc. I checked in with each school's sports information department for an attendance check on who will be missing this summer at each school. Overall, almost everyone seems to be in good shape, but there will be some key players out you already knew about. NC State appears to be missing the most as far as guys who have or would have been key contributors.
Here are the results:
BOSTON COLLEGE: Linebacker Mark Herzlich is out, along with linebacker Mike McLaughlin and fullback James McCluskey, both with Achilles.
CLEMSON: All present.
DUKE: Defensive tackle Kinney Rucker -- out due to injury.
FLORIDA STATE: Offensive lineman Aubrey Phillips transferred (rather loudly) to Auburn, outside linebacker C.J. Mizell won't be around and Willie Downs is headed to junior college. I'm told grades get posted next week, so this list could change.
GEORGIA TECH: Sophomore linebacker Kyle Jackson (foot injury)
MARYLAND: Two signees are heading to prep school: Lorne Goree and David Mackall.
MIAMI: All present.
NORTH CAROLINA: Prep school: Justin Dixon, D.J. Bunn, Johnnie Farms, J.R. Rhodes. Junior college: Ray-Ray Davis. Released from letter of intent: Angelo Hadley (arrested), Prizell Brown (junior college transfer, academics). Pending: Donavan Tate.
NC STATE: Jimmaul Simmons has left the team and school. Injured players who reported but will not compete in fall camp: Donald Bowens, Ryan Cheek, Nate Irving, Colby Jackson, Javon Walker.
VIRGINIA: Kevin Crawford (NT) and Rod Wheeler (TE) are no longer enrolled. OT Morgan Moses will enroll in prep school this fall.
VIRGINIA TECH: Kenny Lewis, Jr. is the only one who's still slowed by injury (Achilles) and will miss at least the first part of camp, if not more.
WAKE FOREST: All present.
Georgia Tech linebackers struggle to stay healthy
Posted by ESPN.com's Heather Dinich
When Georgia Tech's starting linebackers began working out together again this summer, Brad Jefferson compared it to "reuniting with an old friend."
After all, the trio hadn't been on the field together in a game situation since the season opener against Jacksonville State last year because they were all hurt at different times. (And because four times Georgia Tech started in a nickel package, with two linebackers.)
The three starters who opened the 2008 season together -- Jefferson, Kyle Jackson, and Anthony Barnes -- never started together again as a unit. Jefferson and Barnes were both hurt in the opener against Jacksonville State, and Sedric Griffin was so good he never came out. Because of the numerous injuries last year, the Jackets played one true freshman, Steven Sylvester, and nearly played another in B.J. Machen.
"When people talk about our linebackers, they've never really seen us play yet," Jefferson said. "That's why they're kind of talking down, like our linebacking corps didn't really show up last year. That was kind of the reason why. Folks don't know that."
Now they might have to wait even longer for a true evaluation of the Jackets' starters after the recent news that Jackson could be out for the summer with a foot injury. Jackson, a versatile player who can play inside our out, is meeting with a specialist today, but so far, doctors haven't been able to determine exactly what's wrong with his foot. He's been in a walking boot for months now, and the staff hopes to learn more about the injury by next week.
It's still a deep group, as there are about eight athletic players to work with. In addition to Jefferson, who is likely to start at inside linebacker, the Jackets can also count on Griffin and Barnes. Their responsibilities were going to increase anyway because of the inexperience in front of them on the defensive line.
"The linebackers, we're going to have to contribute a lot," said Jefferson, who missed four games in 2008 with a dislocated wrist. "Last year we had a good D-line, and I think we have a good upcoming D-line, but they haven't had as many reps. I've gotta pick up all the slack; that's how I feel as a player. I've got to take that responsibility."
And he's got to stay healthy in the process.
