UNC spring notes

North Carolina starts spring ball at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A few notes on who will and won't be participating:
  • Freshman tailback Giovani Bernard, who tore his ACL on the third day of 2010 fall training camp and redshirted after undergoing surgery Aug. 19, will participate in select periods of spring practice as he continues his rehabilitation.
  • Sophomore quarterback A.J. Blue is also healthy. He played in the first six games as a true freshman in 2009 before tearing three ligaments in his left knee against Georgia Southern. Blue, who redshirted last year, will compete for the vacant quarterback position along with junior Braden Hanson, sophomore Bryn Renner and January enrollee Marquise Williams.
  • Sophomore wide receiver Joshua Adams and sophomore cornerback Terry Shankle will not be available this spring as they continue to recover from medical issues. Adams was diagnosed in January with ANCA Vasculitis, an auto-immune disorder that affects his kidneys. His playing status for next fall will be updated this summer. Shankle is still recovering from an ACL (left) injury he suffered in Carolina’s win over William & Mary in October.
  • Senior cornerback Charles Brown returns this year, but must sit out the first game of the 2011 season and repay benefits as a condition of becoming eligible to play again, according to a recent decision by the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement staff. The NCAA determined Brown accepted benefits in the amount of $86.94 from an individual identified as a prospective agent prior to the 2010 season. Carolina opens the 2011 season Sept. 3 against James Madison.
  • Wide receiver Todd Harrelson will focus on his academics this semester and will not participate in spring workouts.
  • Defensive end Linwan Euwell has left the university and will not return in 2011.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- UNC defensive end Linwan Euwell has been cleared to play in today's game against Virginia, the school announced about two hours prior to kickoff. Euwell was held out of the first five games while the university worked with the NCAA to determine his eligibility status.

The school also announced that Brian Gupton, a junior safety, will miss the rest of the season and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Also, this was supposed to be the final game of a six-game suspension for senior cornerback Kendric Burney, but Burney still has "an unresolved issue relating to the ongoing review" and his status for the Miami game remains uncertain.

"We were expecting Kendric's issue to be resolved prior to the completion of his six-game suspension," UNC AD Dick Baddour said in a prepared statement. "This week we learned that would not be the case."
North Carolina lost before it even stepped on the plane this morning.

A total of 15 players have either been declared ineligible or remain in limbo for Saturday's season opener against LSU for violations of school and/or NCAA rules, according to a release this morning from the university.

Starters Marvin Austin, Charles Brown, Kendric Burney, Greg Little and Robert Quinn have all been declared ineligible, along with backup defensive end Michael McAdoo. Six others, including the 1-2 punch running back combo of Shaun Draughn and Ryan Houston, starting safety Da'Norris Searcy, and backups Linwan Euwell, safety Brian Gupton and safety Jonathan Smith will all be held out of the game while the investigations continue.

The total number of games those 12 players are expected to miss has not been determined, as the NCAA's investigation into possible improper contact with agents and academic misconduct continues.

UNC is also working with the NCAA today to determine the eligibility status of three other players who will not travel to Atlanta for the Chick-fil-A kickoff. The Tar Heels left on Friday morning.

This is a huge punch in the gut, not only for North Carolina's chances at beating LSU (game over), but also for the Tar Heels' hopes for the entire season. This is bigger than Butch Davis and any one player within the program. This is the kind of devastating news that could impact the entire season.

T.J. Yates' interceptions? They're the least of UNC's worries.

The Tar Heels will be missing their leading receiver, the top three rushers (Little was third), the top two punt returners, two of the top three interception leaders, and two of the top four tacklers. The two-deep on the preseason depth chart at running back, strong safety and right defensive end will now start with the third-string player, or others will have to be moved around.

“As I have said, there is no single game more important than the character and integrity of this university,” Davis said in the release. “We are disappointed the players’ choices have denied them the opportunity to compete alongside their teammates and represent the University of North Carolina. Our coaches and players have a tremendous challenge this weekend, and despite these circumstances, our team will be excited to face LSU.”

Too bad UNC's fans won't be excited to watch it.

The weekly injury reports have all come in (some come in much later than others, which is why I wait until Friday mornings to do this). If you don't see 'em, they weren't sent. Maryland will miss Bruce Campbell again, Duke has a handful of key players who could miss the game at Kansas, including Vince Oghobaasse, Virginia is likely to be without Vic Hall, and Boston College will be without defensive tackle Damik Scafe. Not good news for any of those teams. It looks like UNC might -- might -- get Jonathan Cooper back on the offensive line. That would be a huge help.

ATLANTA -- No shockers out of injury reports coming in today, but Victor "Macho" Harris is listed as doubtful for the East Carolina game. Not good, obviously. This isn't going to be an easy game for the Hokies with Macho.
