The ACC kicks off its preseason media days next week, which means we’re closing in on fall camp around the league. With that in mind, we’re looking ahead to the biggest questions coaches are likely to field at the ACC Kickoff and predicting the answers we’re likely to hear.
Next up, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall.
Question: Who is your starting quarterback?
How we think he’ll answer: We have a whole fall camp ahead of us, and we look forward to finding out that answer. We were encouraged by what Matt Johns did this spring, but competition is always a good thing, and we think Kurt Benkert brings a lot to the table.
How we wish he’d answer: We wouldn’t bring in a graduate transfer at quarterback if we had full faith in our returning starter. Figure the rest out for yourselves.
Question: What’s been the biggest difference for you going from Provo, Utah, to Charlottesville, Virginia?
How we think he’ll answer: The people have been great. This is an area of the country that I wasn’t greatly familiar with before looking at this job, but my family and I absolutely love it so far. We’re excited about the competition level in the ACC, and we look forward to making our mark here early on.
How we wish he’d answer: Read Andrea Adelson’s great story if you’re that interested to know about the transition.
Question: Has anyone earned his jersey number?
How we think he’ll answer: (We honestly have no idea. The idea of players not having jersey numbers yet is so foreign to us that there is just no way for us to even guess what Mendenhall could say. Which makes this question interesting, we suppose.)
How we wish he’d answer: Numbers? Who needs them? I always thought it was inappropriate that fans could buy college jerseys while said players receive zero percent of the cut, so I’m doing my part now to rectify the issue. Take that, NCAA.
