Athlon released its preseason ACC preview this week, looking at its All-ACC teams (four of them!) and its national rankings for each program.
The results offer plenty of room for interesting debates as we count down the days until the season kicks off (87 to go!), including:
Virginia Tech has six defenders on the first- or second-team All-ACC lists, including four defensive linemen. So, which Ohio State QB is most looking forward to facing that in Week 1?
But beyond the All-ACC teams, the most intriguing part of Athlon’s projections are the team rankings, specifically in the Coastal. Year in and year out, we talk about Georgia Tech getting precious little respect, but if we look at how Athlon is projecting the division to unfold, the Yellow Jackets are the heavy favorites -- ranked 18th nationally, 17 spots higher than any other Coastal team.
Obviously there are some big question marks surrounding those other Coastal squads, and with Thomas back and a defense that should be improved, there’s no reason not to have Georgia Tech pegged as the preseason favorite. It’s just a unique scenario for Paul Johnson’s crew.
And, of course, we should remember that Virginia Tech has all those stout defenders, and the rest of the division all has some potential (along with some glaring needs). But for one preseason at least, Tech fans can enjoy the role of favorite. The Jackets won’t be sneaking up on anyone this time around.
