ACC: Quentin Sims

ACC position superlatives: Georgia Tech

It's time for a closer look at the Jackets ...

Strongest position: B back

Key returnees: Anthony Allen, Preston Lyons, Lucas Cox

Key departures: Jonathan Dwyer

The skinny: Allen is penciled in to take over for Dwyer and was the team's third-leading rusher last year. Cox moves from A back, making this an even deeper group despite the fact Lyons will miss spring drills after surgery. Richard Watson, who was a third-string B back last year, returns, and the staff likes the potential of true freshman Charles Perkins, who’s already in school. With sophomore Daniel Drummond, the Jackets go five-deep at the position.

Weakest position: Wide receiver

Key returnees: Stephen Hill, Tyler Melton

Key departures: Demaryius Thomas

The skinny: Hill has potential before he graduates to be as good as Thomas, but Melton is the returning starter. Georgia Tech last year completed a total of 78 passes, and 46 were caught by Thomas; 20 other receptions were caught by A backs and B backs. Hill, Melton, Daniel McKayhan and Quentin Sims combined to catch 12 passes last year.

Update from Georgia Tech practice

From Georgia Tech's sports information office:
Paul Johnson said after practice today that true freshman defensive tackle J.C. Lanier will likely have surgery on his injured shoulder and will sit out the 2009 season. Lanier was expected to redshirt the 2009 season.
"We'll probably go ahead and get the shoulder fixed so that he can compete in the spring," Johnson said.
Johnson also indicated that redshirt freshman wide receiver Quentin Sims has taken some snaps at quarterback recently. Sims split time between receiver and option quarterback on the high school level. Two quarterbacks -- sophomore Jaybo Shaw (broken collarbone) and true freshman Jordan Luallen (ankle) -- are currently out with injuries. That leaves Tech with only three healthy scholarship quarterbacks -- junior Josh Nesbitt, redshirt freshman Tevin Washington and true freshman David Sims.
Nesbitt will participate in a live chat Wednesday at 10 a.m. on

Nesbitt, Gardner still out

Georgia Tech sophomore quarterback Josh Nesbitt and redshirt senior Andrew Gardner were both out of practice for the second straight day. Both are listed as day to day, but I'm told it's nothing serious.

While they were gone ...

* Redshirt freshman Bryce Dykes hit freshman receiver Quentin Sims in the corner of the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown.

* Freshman quarterback Jaybo Shaw ran it in from 4 yards out.

* Freshman receiver Tyler Melton had a 20-yard run on an end-around.

* Roddy Jones scored from 30 yards out on a pitch.

Sounds like Paul Johnson's offense is making some progress.
