ANALYSIS: DT Tommy Kelly came off in sub situations with the Patriots bringing on rookie DE Michael Buchanan, the seventh-round pick from Illinois. That gave the Patriots a line with Vince Wilfork at tackle and three DEs in Buchanan, Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones. In those sub situations, Jones reduced inside to tackle, a role he also played in the season opener which gives him a chance to work on guards. Meanwhile, Buchanan had one of the team's four sacks off the defensive right edge (coverage was solid, giving him time to get there), while Jones had two, one of which came from an interior rushing position. Kelly had the other sack. After a slow start, the line seemed to improve from a pass-rush standpoint near the end of the second quarter. … LB Dont’a Hightower played alongside LB Jerod Mayo in the 4-2-5 nickel, with LB Brandon Spikes only used in the base defense. Spikes had worked out in Florida this offseason in hopes of being viewed as more of a three-down linebacker. … With the Patriots playing more base defense than they did in the season opener, it gave a clearer indication of the cornerback depth chart with Kyle Arrington as the No. 2 and Alfonzo Dennard No. 3, although Dennard rotated in for one series with the base defense. … When safety Steve Gregory required some attention from the athletic training staff in the first half, it was notable that rookie Duron Harmon entered the game for him. The third-round pick from Rutgers is ahead of 2012 second-round pick Tavon Wilson on the depth chart.
